    Default R.I.P. David Gemmell

The man who brought us the Rigante series, the Troy series and so many other fantasy novels has passed away. It's a real shock, 'cause I expected to read new books from him until I was much older. Anyone else read his books? He was my inspiration to start amateur-ish writing, and brought me into books tbh.

    RIP

Wikipedia said the next one will release in september, the last one has a lot of question marks. I'd hope perhaps we might get a relative or a friend of his to finish it, even if it wouldn't be as good as having him do so.

Damn, first Robert Jordan becomes seriously ill, and now David Gemmel dies. Fantasy has lost one of it's greatest storytellers...

Gemmell's early work was excellent, original, innovative - dark, serious fantasy, full of brutality and violence and human weakness. No Lord of the Rings-style fairy-tale fantasy - his work was full of genocide, gang-rape, wars and conquests being carried out for the personal glory of individual battle-kings, torture, etc. With the one exception of Druss the Legend, who was a sturdy and noble (if vulgar) sort, his heroes were all murderers and *****mongers, full of anger and spite and hate, (e.g. Connovar, who massacred a whole village of women and children and burned one of his enemy's eyes out with a hot brand / Mace 'the Morningstar' the amoral bandit / Sigarni the rape-victim who brutally slaughtered her helpless tormentors after her escape / Jon Shannow the Christian-fanatic child-killer / Waylander the Slayer, cold-blooded assassin whose heart was long extinguished by his quest for vengeance / Tarantulus the schizophrenic murderer / Viruk the psychopathic rapist, etc., etc).

I felt he started to get a little formulaic at about his 15th/20th book, though.

'Legend', his very first novel, was still his best book. He never managed to recapture its quality.

Weird-looking guy, too. Dessicated, like beef-jerky.

A heavy smoker, he died at the age of 57 of coronary artery disease, on Friday 28th July, 2006, two weeks after undergoing heart bypass surgery.

In his words "I tried to quit smoking and found that the years of polluting my brain with nicotine meant that I couldn't string a reasonable sentence together without filling my lungs with smoke. I went three months without a drag, took a good look at the crap I was writing and lit up."

He died due to graft blockage secondary to advanced coronary artery disease, 2 weeks after a coronary artery bypass operation. According to friends, he had continued to smoke after the surgery.

he wrote great dark fantasy. Loved "the winter warriors" (or however this book is called in English), others were a bit simplistic at times but there were still many books I was aiming to read.
"Sebaceans once had a god called Djancaz-Bru. Six worlds prayed to her. They built her temples, conquered planets. And yet one day she rose up and destroyed all six worlds. And when the last warrior was dying, he said, 'We gave you everything, why did you destroy us?' And she looked down upon him and she whispered, 'Because I can.' "

Very sad day - I always found David Gemmell to be a truly original author, instead of too many others like Robert Jordan and even Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman who borrow lock, stock, and barrel from Tolkein.
