    Default Playing as Rome

OMG, there is huge debt after turn 1.

    Why?

I have to disband all my Armies to break even.

    Is this a bug?

Also after turn 2 my settlements go into auto manage. Is this normal?

auto manage in all your settlements is caused by the rebellion, it's becomes so every time when rebellion begins, It's a bug, I think

huge debt because you lost capua and south italy, isn't true?

I don't think disbanding all your armies is such a good idea because of the inevitable rebellion from the Italian states and also with Hannibal to the North. Once you suppress those threats there's usually a period of peace in Italy when you can develop the economy and you'll be making plenty of money.

And yes most of your cities or all tend to go into auto-manage when the rebellion begins.

Yeah, the only units i disbanded were units that I knew would just sit there and never be used or needed really...For instance at Caralis I disbanded those allied triarii with the bronze upgrades and chevrons and most of the garrison there, leaving only enough for public order. I think I did that in some other places though I dont remember. Other than that I did not disband any of my standing armies, I brought home Both Scipio's (Iberia and Sicily) abandoning Emporiate for the time being. I also brought home the army in Greece, abandoning Dyrrihachium (spelling?) and destroying any buildings I could before to gain some 1st turn spending money I used to retrain a few units (keep in mind with this method that is all the money you are going to have for a little bit).

But anyways with all my armies back in Italy I did a Father-Son Scipio tag team on Hannibal and smashed him, destroyed the other Carthaginian stack and took Genoa with the army you start out with and the army I brought home form greece. By this time you should already have lost Capua and whatever else the rebels take with them. (It literally happens on the 2nd turn every time I have made or restared a Roman campaign..lol) With Papa Scipio and Lil Scipio you should be able to quell the entire rebellion in Italy. At this point, once you have regained Capua, and any other southern cities youve lost, you should start seeing your negative income starting to come back into the green! And with a few more sucessful sieges you will be well on your way to making some good flow. On my 1 turn campaign I am making about 70k per turn, which I hear is nothing compared to some people...haha

Dont worry, just keep playing and you will get it. I was worried at first too but it all works out in the end.

    Good Luck! =)

Edit: Oh yeah, almost forgot about this really helpful starting guide. It was made for RS 2.1a but is still a very good guide for the beginning hardships of the Roman campaign! http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=396194
    Enjoy!

Don't disband those units. Put them on boats and send them to Italy to die fighting to save the Rebuplic.

And just remember the Publius Cornelius Scipio in Sicily is the one who becomes Scipio Africanus. The one in spain is his father. Scipio's father and uncle were both killed in a defeat in spain when their spanish allies betrayed them. They also should not have split their army in two.

The younger Scipio requested the command of the Spanish campaign when nobody else wantd it. Many were concerned that the family had enough disaster in spain. Take the younger scipio and make him the conquerer of Carthage and Spain if you can. Its good role playing.

Later on his grandson Scipio Aemilianus would finish off the city of Carthage itself in the 3rd punic war.

Thats supposed to be the challenge(and fun) of the early Roman campaign. Rome was in a real bind with Hannibal routing or destroying 3 consular armies in 3 consecutive battles in Italy. Rome was so much in turmoil and financialy strapped they had to outlaw the word surrender and use emergency funds set aside in case the Gauls ever invaded like they did back when they sacked Rome. They also had to deal with several of their southern allies defecting to Hannibal as well as dealing with the Macedonian problem in Greece, dealing with iberia by sending 2 legions with the elder Scipio and trying to hold Sicily once Heiros son took the throne and rebblled against Rome.

Follow Fabius advice and let Hannibal comit himself then attack him when he is laying siege. Consolidate your forces from Sicily and bring them to italy. And have the Elder Scipio raid the towns in Spain that don't have walls. Dont bother trying to hold them, strip them down and let them Rebel. Then the rebels will hold them against both Carthage and Galleci for you. Recapture them later in the campaign. Carthago Nova can wait until you are ready for a proper war in Spain. When you lose alot of men through battle you will have more financial breathing room. And of course set taxes to max everywhere you can.
