Default Proper use of hoplite phalanx?

How do I put greek hoplites best to use? I'm new to EB and i'm not sure how to use hoplites to the best of their ability. So far I've just been lining them up in a single line with guard mode enabled, but once the enemy breaks through one section of the line, it's divided into two parts, both being attacked from multiple directions, resulting in a huge mess of confusion. So is there a better way to use hoplites, and are there any recommended formations for hoplite warfare?

Try and placing them in a large arch with reinforcement in the rear to close gaps --->

Hoplites have staying power. That's it. Staying power doesn't win you battles, it gives you time to maneouvre. Support your hoplites with shock infantry, cavalry chargers, or skirmishers that bring some extra fire power in the game. Or use all three, that works too.

I use heavy peltasts to flank or fill in gaps after their javelins are exhausted, but their use is restricted depending on the kind of infantry and cavalry of my opponent. Thracian peltasts are a bit more deadly in this role. Always have a couple of Greek Medium cavalry to counter enemy cavalry. Also slingers. If you face lighter infantry than your hoplites, a two line formation can become a box that will likely hold, if your general doesn't die. Spartans tend to fight to the death, even if their general is dead. Levies will rout pretty soon after general is dead. So two lines double "I" formation that becomes a "C" formation, that becomes an "O" formation. In guard mode, they will whittle down lighter opponents until they rout.

by hoplite phalanx do you mean the Thorakitai Hoplitai (Greek Heavy Hoplite Phalanx):

    or the normal classical hoplites

because the first one I have tried in my very first KH campaign and then never used them again. The classical hoplites however are great for a lot of factions

If you have more than one group of hoplites (which you should) you can get one to tangle in the front using guard mode, preferably multiple ranks, and utilizing their staying power. Flank with another. Or charge their rear; hoplites tend to have quite nice charge stats for non-barbarians. Not to mention that almost all hoplites have good morale and stamina stats; they seem 'solid' but you can use them quite flexible. (Also, get away from Haploi as soon as you can. They're among the least-breakable base troops, but that is probably best used when clogging up a city street.)
