I'm using large units in campaign as sparta and i'm so in debt it's not funny. Should I scale it back or is it normal. I took Messene but I don't have enough money to build anything lol.

Unit size dos not matter, costs remain same.
Just build up slowly, this is not vanilla where you rush to victory in 3 turns.
Apologies for anyone who's message i may miss or not be able to answer
Ok, thank you!
Taking a Major Region (name in capitals) should solve at least part of your financial troubles![]()

When you play as Sparta you have to take Corinth, it gives an income of about 10 000 a round, which should give you a healthy financial basis for further campaigning![]()
"Pompeius, after having finished the war against Mithridates, when he went to call at the house of Poseidonios, the famous teacher of philosophy, forbade the lictor to knock at the door, as was the usual custom, and he, to whom both the eastern and the western world had yielded submission, ordered the fasces to be lowered before the door of science."
Pliny the Elder, Naturalis Historia, 7, 112
I just took Megalopolis but by the time I retrained most of my units my profits had been depleted. How do you know when it's even worthy taking towns as opposed to going directly for a capital? Should I hit the capital first and then take it's surrounding towns?
