The Consul leads his men north-west, to cut the Etruscans off from a path to retreat. He marches near the middle of the column with ten mounted equites acting as a personal retinue. In this way any ambushed might be swiftly defended against. It also made the consul more accessible to his troops.

The Roman army arrives to the north of Ostia two hours before sunset. Locals have indicated that the enemy is only a few miles away. The men look to their commander for instruction, do they press forward and try for a possible surprise attack or do they make camp?

The Roman forces march on for another 45 minutes where they come upon the Etruscan army preparing a camp for the night. While the lines form up behind him, the commander sends his delegates forward to negotiate. Only a small perimeter of Caisran troops guard the camp, with the cavalry on the far side. They signal their commander who quickly mounts his horse and rides out to meet the delegation, silently praising Minerva that the Romans had not assaulted while most of his troops were not in full armor.

The Consul dismounted and walked several paces, within shouting distance.

"Craven, honorless scumbag, I am Consul Tiberius Aemelius Mamercus. You have dared to violate Roman land by leading an army here, but I understand that your men may not be at fault, but you for your own stupidity. Let your leader now name himself, so that Rome may be aware of her enemy. Let it be known that I challenge this man to personal combat in the sight of gods and men, and let this contest determine the outcome of our struggle. That if Rome is victorious you will throw down your arms and walk under the yoke, but if I am struck down and killed you may return to your own lands safely."

Severus looked worried on as the Consul made his intentions clear, for a duel. He did not think that in case of a loss, the Etruscans would simply leave, but rather take advantage of the loss of leadership and press their advantage. Their forces were rather even, after all, not a great force that was used to drive back the Volscii. He gripped his weaponry more fierce and watched from a distance. If the Consul said anything else, he didn't hear it, because of the distance. Nonetheless, he watched on anxiously. Severus hadn't joined the levy for quite a long time, so he silently prayed that he would survive this battle.

Lucretius dismounted, then paces around the ranks of his army. In doing so he gives speeches to his troops in a taunting manner to the Romans. Finally he makes several steps forward.

"I am Lucretius Tricipitinus, enemy of Rome! I will honourable accept your challenge to duel, Roman or Consul. But beware, if either of us is slayed in combat. A battle will still ensue. Is that what you want Roman?"

Lucretius says with a smirk stepping forward once more. There was still plenty of space in between the two. But for now Lucretius waited.

If the Etruscans are bereft of honor, battle will commence. For mine own part I will encourage my men to respect the results of the duel. If your men are honorless and loathe the gods, then we shall have battle and we shall make a ruin of your corpse after we are granted victory.

Lucretius kissed his teeth in discontent, but the odds were against him.

"So be it Roman, my men will respect the duel. If you fall I will leave your corpse for your men. My army and I will return to home and will negotiate from there..And If I fall then the gods have willed it!"

Tiberius drew his sword, picked up a round shield (no bonuses) and strode to the middle ground between both armies. He clenched his sword as sweat formed on his brow. He couldn't help but thinking that this duel might have been a mistake. Still, the entire army was looking on, and if he performed well, news of this feat would spread like wildfire in the city. He said a silent prayer to the gods for aid.

OOC Right got to rp this too , darn I despise time zones.

Lucretius makes a prayer and looked up to the sky. With a spear on one hand, his shield tightly on the other he moved into striking distance for his spear. He couldn't risk failure, he would have to finish this fight quickly. While eyeing down his enemy, he positioned himself to attack. Now the circling began he thought.

The two combatants closed with one another, their spears and shields held at the ready. Tricipitinus believing his offense to be much stronger than his defense started off the affair with a quick lunge up high at Mamercus' head. Tiberius blocked the attack easily and countered with his own thrust. Tricipitinus deflected the incoming spear to the left and started circling around his foe. The Roman seemed adept with his weapon so he have to use all his skills.

He pulled out his sword and went to work, hacking over his head at Mamercus, who having taken his sword from his scabbard parried and lunged forward with a quick counter-strike. It landed on the upper arm, drawing blood but not serious. This enraged Tricipitinus, and he charged forward with vengeance painted on his face. His battered Mamercus with a shield bash then slashed just above the knee. A good swipe that took a chunk of flesh away. Tiberius screamed. His rage and adrenaline over the pain and he came back at the Etruscan with every thing he had. He dropped his shield and swung his sword with both hands. Tricipitinus put his shield up to block, but the over head blow smashed the shield in half and gave Tricipitinus a broken forearm. Another roar of pain came from him as he tried to counter attack with just his sword, but after a few more exchanges nothing was accomplished.

Finally after another minute of vicious fighting, Mamercus was able to get in close and grip Tricipitinus broken arm and twist it behind his back. Lucretius howled in severe agony that echoed across the farmlands.

Knocking the sword away from Tripciptinus, Mamercus states, "The hour of departure has arrived and we go our ways; you to die, and I to live. Which is better? Only the gods knows." With that he sticks his sword up under the leather chest piece into the invader's heart. After a final gasp of a breath, Lucretius falls on his face, dead. Mamercus raises his sword above his head then lets out a yell of victory.

Results: Mamercus is injured from his leg injury. It may heal but he has a limp after the fight. He has won a spear (+2 offense). He now must decide to honor his agreement to the invaders, or attack them while they are cowed with fear from the loss of their leader

The invading army lets out a collective gasp at the loss of their commander, and slowly wavers between a sudden charge or a complete rout. Several horsemen, however, demonstrate in front of the large mass of flesh, and manage to steady the troops. A minute or so later, the Etruscans begin to file towards the Roman army, heads bent low in shame.

Because the Etruscan army was forced under the yoke, the Roman troops had a large selection of weapons to choose from.

    Marcus Camillus Tullius
    Severus Septimius Caepio
    Lucius Junius Pullus

    Can all choose one weapon.
    Spear (+2 to offense)
    Sword (+1 to offense)
    Javelin (+1 ranged offense)

Severus grabbed the sword, grinning. Gods, he was glad the Etruscan scum had been driven off the field. He made his way through the masses of gathering soldiers who all wanted part of the loot and felt a great inner urge to cheer, but he repressed that for now. He was just glad to be alive and watched the spot where the Etruscan army had stood with a big grin. The cowards!
