    Default Disgraced

    Now this is very cool.

I was conducting an assault on a city with a named legion; forces about equal in size and quality. It was a slug match, and I was getting the better of it when I ran out of time. I have sufficient forces to assault again next turn and prevail, but unfortunately, my first cohort was wiped out. I received a game announcement that my general had lost an Eagle, that he was disgraced, and that the only way he can regain his honor is to get back the lost Eagle, which is being held in the city I had attacked. His job will be made harder because now he has multiple negatives to combat and moral.

I have not seen this before. I really like it. If this was created by the moderators here, congratulations on a very cool wrinkle to the game.

I am anxious to get to the next turn and see what happens if I take the city.

Makes it look more realistic, unlike RTW, when you lost a battle with the legion nothing like this happen!
Am looking forward to more of those features.

I've heard that in the past players who have lost an eagle have taken the settlemnent where the eagle was reported to be and nothing happened.

Let us know if you get it back.

I usually play non Roman factions and had a number of Macedonian Generals that had collected several eagles and were given the tag 'Eagle Collector' (or similar - I can't find my screens of it).

When I used to play with Rome I had entire stacks destroyed (With First cohorts) with the Legatus was killed and didn't get this pop up.

But whenever I use the successor states and destroy a Roman stack with a first cohort I'd get the pop up saying I took their aquila.

Eagle collector is actually a trait native to vanilla RTW and I must say its a pretty cool historical accuracy in vanilla for once.

I imagine the reason players who lost an eagle and attacked a settlement to retrieve the eagle saw nothing happened due to a missing trigger in the traits.

Edit: I should also point out that disgraced is also a vanilla trait. I believe the new triggers for recovering an eagle is an RSII addition though. & in general RSII has an extremely complex trait system which makes the campaign much more immersive!

Well of course first thing very next turn, I attacked again. As I expected, I easily prevailed, but at the end of the battle, no message. Nothing.

End of turn, started new turn, announcement at the beginning of the turn that I had indeed reclaimed the Eagle. But my general still carried the Discraced trait. Still a loss of morale and influence. On the other hand he gained a couple of combat traits. So maybe he does not need to fall on his sword. His future as a governor does not look bright, but there may yet be a future for him.

Lesson to be learned: Once you start building named legions, that First Cohort is more than just the biggest unit with the best morale. It is your Eagle. It inspires, but at a risk. I will continue to press it to the front, but I will not sacrifice it to buy time for other cohorts, which really is why I lost it to begin with. The entire legion must die before the Eagle will be lost. That does feel right.

    Good fun. I like it.

If memory serves, in vanilla RTW the eagle was taken to another city, I thought it stated which when the 'captured' message appeared.

Yes, the message told me the name of the city, but it was the same city where the Eagle was lost. Perhaps the event you remember from Vanilla was the result of a battle in the open field. But what exactly was lost? Honestly, it was so long ago that I played Vanilla I do not remember having Eagles.

    Straight from vanilla's trait descriptions.

I was positive it was in vanilla because I've been working on traits for CATW. Vanilla had 'first legionary cohort' or some such which had a legionary eagle persay. Gave a command bonus etc. Can't remember the small details but it was definitely in vanilla.

I'm fairly certain Halie is right, I remember playing IB VGR and losing a battle then seeing 'Captured Eagle' and the city name didn't match their current name for the city which leads me to believe its in vanilla too...

My general did get the Eagle back, but he did not acquire the Partly Redeemed trait. Oh well.

Yes, my faction announcements at the beginning of the turn after I took the city told me that I recovered the eagle. But the general did not get any credit.
