its a question thats been lingering in my head for a while now. does the opinion that other countries have on the presidential candidates influence the way americans will vote?

where i live in Canada and with my age group, most people are pro-Obama. Do Americans take into consideration on how the rest of the world will view their president, and does that have an swing on how they vote?

I early voted yesterday in Texas. Although I find it interesting how other countrys view our election and candidates, I can personally say it didn't impact at all in my decision.

As an aside....salutes to the first person I ever voted for President, George McGovern, in 1972. He passed away a few days ago.

no, but Americans are free to vote how they please. It is their country after all.

However, US Presidential candidates ought to realize that their country doesn't live in a bubble, that it aint the hyperpower it was in the 90s and that what they say will have repercussions if they are elected.

I don't care what my wife thinks about my voting, never mind what some smelly foreigners think.
As a teenager, I was taken to various houses and flats above takeaways in the north of England, to be beaten, tortured and raped over 100 times. I was called a “white slag” and “white ****” as they beat me.

I dont think it will influence by a great extend no.
In anycase i admit some sort of influence might be considered where either by those Americans who wish more strongly for a more active or passive foreign policy.
I guess what im trying to say it has always some sort of influence even if its not blatant obviously to see.

One thing i know for certain though, is Americans always ask how we foreigns view USA and americans when they are in Europe. Frequently even, all americans i meet so far when they are aboard and were quite a few, sooner or later ask it, it seems to me there is an interest or care about USA image and reputation outside of US at personal level. That is the impression i have personaly. I cant say the same about a German, or a French though or even an Englishman, for an example. Not always anyway.

That might explain why support for Ron Paul was so low... or it might be that there is a conspericy to spite my communist uncle Luke...

Of course not, I'm voting for whatever candidate I feel is in my best interests. Whether this makes some euro or asian happy or sad is entirely irrelevant to me.

seriously, why would ANY american going to vote go "Hmm, I wonder if the Germans will be ok with my pick?"

Because we Germans KNOW how to place a good vote. Look for example, some 79 years ago we voted this Austrian guy with the cool moustache into Reichskanzler office, and he build some really great highways

I don't think the rest of the world really cares about who wins. Maybe Canadians do, being right next door. I think most people view America as some monolithic entity full of marines draped in flags, fat white men in 18 gallon hats wearing spurs, and black ghetto rappers.

Personally I don't care. I think all your politicians are so plastic and artificial they'd make good Ken dolls. Whoever wins you will continue to interfere in the affairs of other sovereign nations, support :wub:s and terrorists, have bases across the globe, and go to war on an almost continuous basis while waving American flags, talking about freedom, and having tender intimate love rendezvous' with your guns while whooping ''YEEEEEEE-HHAAAAARRRR''.

Ironic that Canadians support Obama considering his anti nafta stance would basically tank our economy.

Obama isn't anti-NAFTA. Don't kid yourself. That's lip service for the working class who were raped by NAFTA.
Once a political decision has been reached to proceed with internal disturbances in Syria, CIA is prepared, and SIS (MI6) will attempt to mount minor sabotage and coup de main [sic] incidents within Syria, working through contacts with individuals. Incidents should not be concentrated in Damascus. [A] necessary degree of fear, [...] frontier incidents and [staged] border clashes [will] provide a pretext for intervention. The CIA and SIS should use [...] capabilities in both psychological and action fields to augment tension. [Funding should be provided for a] Free Syria Committee [and arms should be supplied to] political factions with paramilitary or other actionist capabilities.

No it wont actually happen. No most of what politicians say is disingenuous, but thats really my point: As far as rhetoric go, Canadians shouldnt like Obama. As far as actions go, hes indecipherable from Bush or most politicians in modern America, which Canadians also claim they despise. So we again should hate him, but we dont.

Do other countries worry about what Americans think of their leaders?

    Yes, yes they do.
