    Default The Three Horns

While attempting to uncover information about Aurane Waters (some nice theories with him, not much hard evidence for any of them though) I came across an interesting thread on a horn that could summon monsters from the deep, or rather Krakens.

Basically, when the Celtigers (the lords of Claw Isle) bend the knee to Joffrey after the Blackwater, Ser Axell Florent begins arguing for Stannis to sack Claw Isle. But in his description is a very interesting tid-bit:

“Claw Isle was but lightly garrisoned, its castle reputedly stuffed with Myrish carpets, Volantene glass, gold and silver plate, jeweled cups, magnificent hawks, an axe of Valyrian steel, a horn that could summon monsters from the deep, chests of rubies, and more wines than a man could drink in a hundred years.”

    And later from Pirate Saan:

“The old pirate wagged a finger at him. “Forgiving, yes. Forgetting, no. All that good gold on Claw Isle that might have been mine, it makes me old and tired to think of it. When I die impoverished, my wives and concubines will curse you, Onion Lord. Lord Celtigar had many fine wines that now I am not tasting, a sea eagle he had trained to fly from the wrist, and a magic horn to summon krakens from the deep. Very useful such a horn would be, to pull down Tyroshi and other vexing creatures. But do I have this horn to blow? No, because the king made my old friend his Hand.”

And even later, in case two quotes wasn't enough, a line from the Undying Prophecies:

"... three horns must you sound... one for giants and one for krakens and one for dragons"

So far the Horn of Jaruman may or may not have been found by Mance Rayder (my guess is on not found). Euron/Victorian have Dragonbinder. Perhaps this is a third legendary horn for karakens. And it almost fits quite nicely with the prophecy of Three Dragon Heads. Perhaps the three heads are the legendary horns?

Also, three blasts for White Walkers, three horns? At first I just thought this was a passing thought, but it fits so perfectly.

Anyway, I'm beginning to become sure that there is a horn for krakens, mostly because of the Undying Prophecies line, but also because the mythical giants and dragons have already appeared. A small sections from Varys,

The eunuch drew a parchment from his sleeve. “A kraken has been seen off the Fingers.
He giggled. “Not a Greyjoy, mind you, a true kraken. It attacked an Ibbenese whaler and
pulled it under. There is fighting on the Stepstones, and a new war between Tyrosh and
Lys seems likely. Both hope to win Myr as ally. Sailors back from the Jade Sea report
that a three-headed dragon has hatched in Qarth, and is the wonder of that city-"

shows that krakens have appeared as well. I'm also thinking this connects to the message that was sent to Jon Snow from the Hardhome expedition. "Dead things in the water"? It could be that this is just some zombie kraken, but maybe the kraken horn is needed to fight off those dead things.

Also a more crazy idea that kind of fits is that there are 4 horns, or perhaps more. Looking at the horns it seems like the Kraken Horn would represent water, Dragonbinder to represent fire, the Horn of Joramun to represent earth. Perhaps a horn from the Vale for air? The First Men's king of the Mountain and the Vale was called the Griffin King an the Arryn (Andal) who conquered the Vale was said to ride on the back of a giant falcon. Though I doubt this is the case as the Undying Prophecies make no mention of it. Nor does anyone ever mention such a horn, it's merely speculation.

Looking over my post again before I make the thread, I keep looking back at the three blasts and three horns part. I really think I might be on to something here. Come on, three dragon heads, three magical horns, three great beasts to be summoned, and three blasts for White Walkers. Can't wait for someone to rip that theory apart.

Any thoughts my fellow crackpot theorists?

I find it amusing. I totally missed those Kraken references and they seem legit.

I missed it as well. Probably wrote it off as poetic embellishment or figurative references. Seems to be something there, though. Now you have to wonder how the kraken horn will find its way off Claw Island to somewhere that matters.

There is also a theory that the broken horn that Samwell carries, and is still in possession of at the Citadel, might actually be the real Horn of Winter. There were several points for it like how it was buried with the cache of dragonglass weapons and such, but nothing to disprove it as far as I know.

Considering how magic is returning to the world it wouldn't surprise me if Krakens start showing up. But they might just be regular creatures unrelated to magic (as we have the giant squids).

Alway thought that the "things in the water" bit referred to Krakens or some other sea monster used by the Others. Thought I think a horn so powerful as that would ahve played a more important role in the last books ( The horn of winter being an important objective for the wildlings and the dragon horn being an important object in Victarion's chapters) instead of just having been mentioned a couple of times by a pirate and abandoned as an objective. You could at least have Melisandre have a vision about it or something (either to use it or to destroy it if it belongs to the Great Other).

Also another mythical creature from the books is the ice spider who is supposed to be used by the Others. I'm kind of interested of how they fit in the picture (maybe the direct response to dragons). They might be controlled by a horn that belongs to the Others.

Grant you it would be awesome to have a Dragon-Kraken fight, I would have thought them to be mentioned more if they were so important and had a special horn of their own.

I've also heard a theory that the "dead things in the water" referred to things that people thought were dead, like Krakens. Not necessarily zombie karakens.

If the theory is true, it'll probably surface in WoW. There is a theory that Aurane Waters went to Claw Isle after he ditched Cersei to steal the horn. Though that's probably not what is going to happen.

I think Old Nan says something like, "Hunting [men] with their packs of pale spiders, big as hounds" when she tells Bran about the White Walkers. Shame we haven't seen any of the ice spiders yet though.

Why did you put the thought of a Greyjoy riding a Kraken into my head?
It is such a quiet thing, to fall. But far more terrible is to admit it.

Nice theory. I think the 3 horns bit is a sound piece of speculative theory. +rep!

I think the "dead things in the water" is just wights in the water. Like the way zombies walk through the river in Land of the Dead or stroll across the seabed like in World War Z.

Regarding the 3 horns relating to the 3 blasts, I think it's a bit too tenuous here. The number three is a common literary rhetorical device such as triadic structure. Three is the magic number after all, it sticks in your noggin more easily than 2 or 4. Think of lists like "butcher, baker and candlestick maker". So I think the 3 horns is just better than 2 horns, and 3 blasts better than 4, but it's personal opinion of course
