Default Story mode vs free play

It seems to me that Rome 2 will put a lot of emphasis on a story driven campaign where you have to follow a certain 'historical' path, like conquering Carthago. It's probably a strategy by SEGA/CA to win over new customers in order to make a larger profit even though the budget is 40% higher than for the last TW game (according to CA).

I just hope that the freedom of 'play as you want' and 'creating an alternative history' will not suffer in the process since that's really a hallmark of TW-games.

    What do you think?

I don't think it is necessarily a "required" path. You may start the game with war between Carthage and Rome, but you by no means have to conquer them or even win.

Why not both? some sort of Senate missions like Rome TW had, you dont have to follow it but its nice if you do.

Its probably historical battle thats why its scripted like this. Other then that it wouldnt be good if its heavily scripted like this.

There will be no required path through the campaign. The siege of Carthage we have been showing is a historical battle much like ones in previous TW games.

I hope there will some sort of linear campaign (future DLC acceptable) like in Napoleon's campaign in NTW.

I agree with the original post, i don't like being taken down a linear pathway in any game.

Always funny how people ignore posts so they can rant some more.

Always funny how people see a rant where there is only an inoffensive opinion, i answered the original poster and my view is a valid one to hold even after clarification, whether anyone else agrees with it or not.

I think TW will keep the mostly free-play setup its' had so far. It would be cool to have a guided campaign, but that's more their style for tutorials than for the main campaign. Can't see them doing that here.

On the topic of Senate missions, I hope these make a little more sense than in previous games (this goes along with improved diplomacy). I hated getting missions from my council to attack my decades long ally for a useless piece of land, whether it is historical or not. The Senate's missions should make sense for the timeline YOU have built.

This disgrace to civilization should be done away with at once. Heroism at command, how violently I hate all this, how despicable and ignoble war is; I would rather be torn to shreds than be a part of so base an action. It is my conviction that killing under the cloak of war is nothing but an act of murder.

    What do you think?
Don't you know how in Napoleon you had different campaign victory options? Historical was one of them, but you had the classic ones, the short and long one too, they will not disappear since they are the foundation of Single Player gameplay.
