Default Hopes and Ideas for the Celts

I don't usually make threads like this, lol

One of the cultures I am most eager to see is the Celtic one. I'm really hope they do it well. I had this one idea for celtic units(or other barbaric factions for that matter). You could give the option to taunt before the battle or during the battle. Didn't the celts scream, rattle their shields and other things to intimidate before the battle? Wouldn't that be awesome to see? Especially if the Romans could react to it, if you know what I mean. Anyways, I have high hopes for these factions. They have confirmed that places like Gaul and Briton will be more than one faction(need to find the source) Unit-wise, I hope it's very accurate or as least not a bad stereotype, lol Would be awesome to see some distinctions between classes, like the nobles in better armor and such.

That's all from me right off the bat. Please post your hopes, ideas and insight on the celts. BUT PLEASE NO BASHING, TROLLING OR NEGATIVITY! Positive and Constructive comments only.

You were able to do that in Rome 1 and there were many unit abilities for units in shogun 2. I highly doubt that they wont include this feature.

Yeah the Celts taunting the Romans, who had thick ranks, high chins, huge shields, and brutal disciplinary training usually went over well.

They weren't magic buttons they were ability buttons. Click a button and your men perform their warcry, what's so magic about that???

I'm playing tennis. I dont scream like other people do, but when I do its when I'm going hard, and that usually makes the other guy lose his concentration, so he either misses, or I can easily throw the ball back at him.

IIRC most cultures did similar things, it certainly wasn't confined to the Celts. In fact one of the few that are said to have not made any taunts and battle cries were the Romans, who some sources state kept silent during that phase of the battle, but then we also have other sources describing them as making taunts so it doesn't seem to have been a consistent thing.

Well imo silence can be just as taunting as screaming and professional soldiers shouldn't mind neither because they are prepared for this. Thats why loosing morale points because of some shouting is ridiculous to me ... hence magical

Just because they're professional troops doesn't mean they wouldn't be intimidated by the sight of unwashed barbarians baying for their blood. And its debuff/buff doesn't even last that long, it's supposed to be used right before a massed charge to smash the front and hopefully break the enemy.

I agree that it shouldn't inflict such high morale penalties, but it should get your soldiers fired up for a charge. If CA is implementing a more thorough traits system for characters and such, I'd like to see it become an ability gained by having a very aggressive general or something like that.

Or maybe only be used once per battle, so that it's more decisive.

Yeah but it's a game. You have to kind of remember that. It doesn't make sense either that all the horses can pull off 90 degree turns on a dime either.

I hope they aren't called Celts for one...

I want to see various tribes all over the map, with noticeable and worthwhile differences even if they do fall under roughly the same cultural grouping as others.

Here are my hopes for the Celtic factions:

    1. They shouldn't be depicted as overly barbaric. It's simply a known fact these days that they weren't anywhere near as primitive as they were depicted in RTW1.

    2. Their fighting style should be kinda similar to the Romans. Fluid formations, infantry with javelins, etc. shieldwall/pseudo-phalanx infantry should also be in.

    3. Their major starting weakness should be their fragmented nature, which prevents them from having as many professional units as the Romans. There should be many different tribes and factions to choose from. The player's initial objective when playing as a gaulish tribe would be to conquer rival tribes. The other tribes may not be depicted as pushovers like the "rebel" factions, but be proper factions that can form alliances and stuff.

    4. Because they can't afford many elite or professional units at the beginning, they have to rely on a large amount of mostly unarmoured semi-professional, levy or militia-type soldiers that can't stay in battle for too long. Thus, a Gaulish army has to either be used in an overwhelming, aggressive manner or in a solid defensive way. Later on if the player's faction expands the bigger budget would allow the player to get more proper, professional units.

    5. No stupid crap like RTW1's warcry.

The romans keeping silent was their way of psching out he enemy, it was seen as weird because everyone else had war cries.
However there are accounts of roman armies letting out shouts before battle so i presume it depends on the preference of the commander or the situation at hand

Their settlements and the walls and gates for them, should look much more accurate this time.

Yes. But the warcry should be automatic when they stand close enough of the enemy. Like in Med2 where your soldiers passively taunted the enemy before charging. Some skulls hanging from their belts would be awesome as well, not to mention historically accurate.

I'd like to see the differences between the different Celtic groups. Cisapline Gauls should be more Italian looking, Narbonne Gauls should be more Greek looking, Aquitanian Gauls should be more Iberian looking, Celtic Gauls should be more traditional, and Belgian Gauls should be more German. Then you've got the Britons, Picts, and Goidels. You've also got Celtiberians who had more north African influences. Etc. Then you've got the eastern semi Greek Celtic guys in Pannonia and Galatia.

Caesar seem to have considered the Gauls to be civilized with the exception of the Belgians who he said were more Germanic. However he wasn't insulting them, he was complimenting them as more masculine and tougher than his own people. Less exposed to finery. Later some of Rome's best soldiers were Belgians.

It seems the Auquitani were actually not Celtic, but Basque people.
