He is brought to the atrium, where Licinius is overseeing the final moments of the installation of a reflecting pool.

"Ah, Marcus, it is good to see you again. Do you have a moment to discuss some financial matters?"

[Okmin]

"Of course, Valerius. How can I help you?"

[Rhapture]

"I will come straight to the point, Marcus. I am here to collect the taxes that were issued under the Lex Inlationis Civibus Mamerca. From my estimation you would owe 450 denarii to the state this year." Valerius states

[Okmin]

The tribune raises an eyebrow.

"We are still at war with the Volsci?"

[Rhapture]

"Yes, sir we are. We do not have any peace treaty with them. And until we do, or they are conquered, then the Senate considers Rome at war with that tribe of miscreants. Even now I am sure they are planning some kind of revenge for there horrible loss of last season. As per the imperium of my office of Quaestor, if the taxes are not paid, a fine will be imposed on top of the taxes." Valerius continues

"Fine, fine. Just doing your job, of course..."

Licinius grumbles and has a slave bring the appropriate amount (449 denarii).

"Tell me, though, quaestor: can the people ever expect an end to this 'war' and these taxes?"

[Rhapture]

"Certainly. If peace is attained through diplomacy or Rome conquers them. Or the tax is repealed. But I am not about to repeal them. "
"Thank you and good day, Tribune Licinius." Valerius takes the denarii, loads it into his escorted cart and leaves for the next plebeian house.
