Publius Valerius arrives at the treasury offices to begin his year as quaestor. He is determined to ensure that all taxes are properly collected and the books kept up to date.

Valerius takes his station in the Temple and awaits the bidders for the contract to build a new temple. The bidders would have to propose a price on marble or lead which the state would then buy, if they wanted they could make a statement about their product or why Rome should buy from them.

Gaius arrives at the temple of Saturn. Owning two marble mines in Ostia he hopes he could make some money. Hopefully his bid would be accepted he thought.

"Ave, Valerius. I have come to put a reasonable price on marble for the state to buy. Of course, it all depends if you are willing to pay the price though."

"As we are the only purchasers at this point, Gauis, I would not price your goods too high. We have a limited budget and this is a temple to be consecrated to a goddess."
Valerius replied

"Agreed.The mines in Ostia I own have recently produced two fine cuts of marble. Within the next year my mines would had produced another. I am willing to offer you these three pieces of marble for 360 denarii. 240 for the first two pieces of marble, and 120 for the third for next year."

Valens raises his eyebrows and laughs, but turns it into a cough...

This man really has no idea in the world how much the marble and lead stacks are worth... He is basically selling them for animal prices

Sextus silently thanked the gods that the man before him had been selling marble, not lead.

"My enterprises have earned me 2 units of lead large enough to supply a temple of this proposed size. I would be willing to part with these units starting at 2,500 denarii per unit."

"I will sell all the lead for 2,300/unit. That will cover the costs of the lead, for 6,900 denarii..."

Gaius whispers to Valerius while the bidding for lead was heating up.

"Marble for 2,350 denarii for every chunk of Marble you desire. 7,050 denarii. And if I am not able to produce you the marble for next year, I will pay you 2,350 back for compensation. So Valerius what does your pocket say?

"Ah, I see we are finally getting some better offers. I will allow a little longer before I close the bid." Valerius smiles as the costs have gone down
