Default Colombia's chance of peace - Peace negotiations FARC & Goverment

After decades of fighting, the Farc and the government appear to believe victory on the battlefield is impossible, and are holding talks in Oslo aimed simply at ending the conflict.

Ofcourse, most of us who are intrested in South-America and Colombia did have read much about the FARC and the civil war. In fact, this is one of the longest civil war's around.

Since a peak in the late 1990s, when they fielded 20,000 fighters, the Farc's strength has waned after some of its leaders were killed or captured in a government military onslaught, which frightened hundreds of low- and mid-level fighters into deserting.

The group is now led by a less hawkish, more pragmatic generation of commanders; Colombia's government, under Santos, is also more moderate than that of his predecessor, Alvaro Uribe, who vowed but failed to crush the rebels militarily.

Find it also funny that Duchie Tanja Nijmijer is also going to Oslo to negotiate.

The peace negotiations must put an end to almost fifty years armed conflict in Colombia. After initial talks in Oslo moves the delegation to Havana to smoke a good peace sigar with always peace intended Castro and Chavés .

What do you think TWC, is the FARC sirious about their ''peace'', and could this bring peace in one of the longest conflicts of the last 100 years?

Well if nothing else is accomplished here's some more evidence America won the cold war, the Communist leader of Cuba is wearing a red, white, and blue corporate branded tracksuit from West Germany. He's looking good. Can't say the same for that bloated ignoramus Chavez.

(I know those are Cuba's national colors...)

Pretty much since the beginning of history.

Let's hope this conflict ends without harming any more of Colombia's beauty. It would certainly be a good place to live without the violence that plagues the country.

Hopefully the Leftists stop trying to overthrow the government. It's tough enough down there. Uribe has been a game changer I think. Now Santos can play good cop to Urbie's bad cop and get a peaceful resolution.

I am curious what effect if any this will have on cocaine prices.

Were I an entrepreneur I would try to take advantage of it.

All those attractive Colombian women shouldn't be playing communist revolutionary. They should be making me sandwiches.

Why should the government negotiate when they're already winning?

Columbia has been dealing with a low intensity insurgency for going on 50 years. I don't think people realize that, or the sheer level of violence that occurred long before cocaine became a source of revenue for the FARC. Just as heroin in Afghanistan for the Taliban.

The fact there could be a peace deal is significant. But the government, supported by the US, has seen by every measurable, a huge success in stemming the level of violence. They have absolutely decimated the FARC.

This defines the "long war" that we get all wet in the pants these days to understand.

Cause somehow they seem there is no easy victory I guess. They are ''winning'' for the last ten years. Still, no victory, and much FARC terrorist bombings.

The US doesn't 'supervise' that conflict. We give them money and guns. Don't know how that could ever be a 'supervisory' role. We supervised the methodical destruction of the Escobar organization.

There sick of it. Half a century in technical civil war does no good for a country. Both sides should simply give up there respective goals: Columbia's goal to fully crush the rebels and the FARC's wish for "revolution." True peace in a war only comes when both sides come to the conclusion, that neither can truly win. I wish Columbia well in ther hopes for peace.

FARC are just drug dealers now and that is all. They will be as hard to take down as any such organization like MS13
