I sure hope the "French tactical naivety" isn't representative for the AI.

On the other hand, they said: "There'll be loads of new features in these battles that you'll have to take into account, like impassable terrain. The AI will look at that and think of how it can use it to its advantage"

BTW, didn't the AI do amphibious invasions (on campaign map) in Rome too? I clearly remember some experiencing it, and others not.

Another new addition to the strategic map are princesses - pawns that can be used in a variety of underhand ways. Little more than *****s in expensive garbs, these harlot diplomats can be prostituted to make alliances with rival factions (through arranged marriages), or sent to seduce enemy generals to your cause.
Mercilessly slaughter the prisoners you capture during a battle (a feature reprised from the original Medieval) and your general's 'dread' rating will rocket, making enemies fearful on the battlefield and civilians more obedient within cities. And while showing mercy in war may make your generals a target for 'big girly girl' remarks from opposing armies, at least the people will love them should you order them to babysit a settlement. Unless of course they raid the fridge, invite over their girlfriend and leave sticky stains on the sofa, in which case, they could be faced with a revolution.
    sounds cool

While Total War has been at the forefront of strategic innovation for the best part of six years now, one area that's lacked depth has been diplomacy, a failing that the team are keen to rectify. "We've spent a lot of time improving diplomacy," explains Roxburgh.
    Sounds good

Also good news that there will supposedly be loads of videos for assassination with videos for each permetation of whos assassinated, the assassin and the outcome

Avid Total War fans will be happy to know that the assassination animations - brief cut-scenes, which chart the success or failure of a professional hit - are back after their disappearance in Medieval and Rome. "We have loads of these, so it's unlikely you'll ever see the same one twice," Roxburgh says. "There are different movies for all of the different targets you can kill, for successes, failures and even ones for when the target manages to escape," adds Mark Sutherns. Unlike Shogun's basic and repetitive animations, these murderous moments prove of the highest quality, perfectly raising that tension before reaching their unpredictable conclusions.

It's only more than 2 weeks old. Besides, I'd never have seen it if it hadn't been posted here. Oh, well. I suppose it didn't really say anything new.

Well 2 weeks is enough for a preview to get old .
By that time it has already been beaten to death.

During the course of the next 20 minutes, I sit through three battles, each one more brutal and cinematic than the last.
Twenty minutes and he managed to fit in 3 battles?

Doesn't fill you with much hope about reduced kill and unit speeds does it?

What strikes me most though isn't the French tactical naivety
So CVG have just said the AI sucks.

Oh well, it's got nice graphics and realistic death finishing moves, who cares about gameplay!

Doesn't mean he finished 3 battles, he only saw 3 battles.
CA did the same in RTW, they rarely actually finished the battles. They just showed a cool thing and moved on to the next battle.

So CVG have just said the AI sucks.
    No not really.
We didn't see the battlemap so it is hard to judge but it seems that the player had a chokepoint with woods all a round and spikes in front.
Of course the AI could have moved all it's units around through the woods but that would have been pointless since it would have made them tired and the player would have simply moved it's army to counter it.
So the AI sent it's infantry up, probably to "occupy" the player's troops and sent the cavalry through the woods in order to flank the player(which is also good sign since it seems to know that cavalry+spikes= bad day) which the player in this case was prepared for such a move so it failed to gain the upper hand.
To me that doesn't sound like a bad AI since if it was the AI from RTW 1.0 then it would have moved the entire army up the front to get butchered.
But instead it tried with a the old "meatwall" trick.
    An improvement no doubt.

But the AI wouldn't be attacking a ridge, LINED WITH SPIKES AND RAINING DEATH.

I doubt the archers can pick up their stakes and replant them again during the battle. The AI could have tried a different attack route with the entire army so they are attacking at an angle, perhaps even going through the woods to lessen the effectiveness of the Longbowmen. I don't see how impaling your infantry on spikes while they get shot up by longbowmen just so you can launch an easily visible small cavalry attack against an entire army consititutes good AI.

Here is a handy MS paint diagram.

Also TB666, you missed my point, CVG actually said the AI sucks. They basically said half of the gameplay is crap.

Man, I tell ya. I've heard so many people who are total war fans making assinine remarks about how CA and SEGA make the totalwar games even more dumb by the minute and appealing to the masses for more money. However, it seems like a lot of those people are such kids and jump to conclusions without even knowing anything about the context or even what the author meant or witnessed.

I think people should stop chopping eachother's heads off, just for having a different opinion. Imagine how boring this forum would be if everyone had the same opinion, eh? "YES, WE ALL THINK MTW2 WILL ROCK!" or "YES, THE AI AND DIPLOMACY SUCKS!"

Remember the mob shouting: "YES, WE'RE ALL INDIVIDUALS!"

    Hehe nice drawing.
As I said, it is hard to judge since we didn't see the battlefield(would be awesome if we could see a video of this battle) or what units was involved and quite frankly the guy that wrote the preview sounds like an idiot.
But IMO sending the army through the woods would have had no real effect, they would lose anyway.
They would just be picked off as they exit the woods, slightly disorganized especially the cavalry(which according to CA will be bad again when being in woods).
While moving the cavarly through the woods wasn't the best move, it still was a very good chance that it would have routed the player's army if it went as planned.
As a avid fan of using this kinda tactics myself(used it with good results ever since STW), the meatwall tactic is a risky but such a rewarding tactic if it goes as planned.
If I would have done this in this battle however is hard to say.
Once again we don't know the troops, how spikes effect infantry and so on.
    I might do it tho.
