    Default On Rebellion

    Hello All,

Ive just started getting into Shogun 2, and am really enjoying it. The depth makes up alot for the width.

Anywho, Im currently playing as the Date and having some splendid battles as I snap up northern Honshu. Unrest, and sometimes rebellion, however, is a constant menace.

This perplexed me somewhat. It made alot of sense in games like Empire, where a foreign nation would rule over another. Of course, rebellion would foment.

Im no historian, but it is clear the Japanese were one people with one largely dominant religion. Ive also read that during this time, there was unrest with the peasentry, but only when the local officials were meddling in trade, crops and other everyday affairs. So long as the Daimyo kept his hands off the lower classes, they were inclined to just let things be.

My point is, does anyone know why rebellion is featured so strongly in the game? Is it a hold over from previous total war titles, or is it just because im playing on Hard? Are there any mods that take a more realistic approach to peasent unrest? How do you deal with unrest, beyond the obvious of non taxing?

    Thanks for the ideas,

    Rake.

I think it's partly to stop you from blitzing through the country with a single army; after all, Resistance vs Foreign Occupation and sometimes religious/allegiance differences create a lot of unrest.
Other than that, I can't say rebellions often happen to me.

How do you deal with unrest, beyond the obvious of non taxing?
    - create garrison until resistance vs occupation declines. Garrisions are pretty easily scaleable and reasonably cheap; not to mention they come in handy in surprise invasions .
    - keep a conversion agent with invasion forces to speed up reduction of religious differences.
    - build a happiness building here and there (i.e. where eco buildings create additional unrest)

I guess you have not heard of the saying prevalent in this time period.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gekokuj%C5%8D

    The low oppress the high.

Vassals turn on their liege lords
    Sons overthrow their fathers
    Brothers battle brothers
Peasants band to form Ikki groups
Fishmongers turn into takoyaki stall owners (ok that one was made up.)

(Its clickable by the way....An S2 overhaul mod.)

Seriously. Click it. Its the only overhaul mod that's overhauling enough to bring out NEW clans

    Hey =)
    Erwin answered the historical part.

for the game part: always ensure happiness in your provinces. Dishonour (lower than 3 daimyo honour) gives +1 global unhappiness per dishonour. (looting, attacking allies etc lowers your honor).

Newly captured provinces has resistance to invaders which slowly fades. And sometimes religious difference.

    To keep up happiness:
-Sake dens and buddhist temples gives +happiness to the province they are built in.
-Monk and Metsuke agents provide happiness in the province they are stationed in (castle).
-Arts gives happiness (Zen, tea ceremony (through honor) for instance).
-Station cheap units (ashigaru) to keep happiness up if you need to.
-Higher tier castles offers more repression which reduces invader resistance faster.

a thumb rule is to build markets + sake dens in economic provinces with buddhist temples up to 5 total for monk agents. This should ensure good enough happiness in most provinces exept for unit producing ones.

    What causes unhappiness:
    -capturing a province (invader resistance)
    -religious difference.
-Daimyo dishonor (looting/pillaging, backstabbing allies and abusing treaties. cancelling alliance/vassalage (unless you are the vassal i think) doesnt give negative honor, but it does if you attack within a certain amount of turns after.)
    -Any buildings on fire (sabotaged/raided)
-Agents/generals with -happiness (some retainers give this)
    -probably some stuff i forgot

    Good luck =)

Edit: Yup knew i forgot something. The higher difficulty you play at, the more invader resistance you get from capturing provinces. The AI doesnt have that penalty at all. So at hard you get 7 pts of IR i think, with 4 pts of IR at normal. (give or take 1-2 pts for both). Why doesn't the AI get it? well.....To give them a chance (there's mods rectifying this)

Problem as date is that the regions are quite big, so you spend multiple turns travelling from city to city. As other factions, you can rest/replenish a few turns in a city, and in one turn reach the next city. While you are resting/replenishing in that xity, your garrison acts as a buffer to unrest.

Metsukes and religious agents also can provide a few points that make the difference between unrest and happines

As Date, tossing up sake den along with market and utilising metsuke is probably the best option. With 1-2 ashigaru garrison units if needed. Ugo, uzen, miyagi and fukushima is all rich provinces you'll want metsuke in to boost your economy anyway. This should allow him to not only boost his economy fairly alot, but also keep necessary happiness up until he consolidate his forces (recruiting more units) for a 2nd push.

Its his first playthrough though so let him see how his campaign plays out beyond that ^^
