    Default PC beeping

The past two nights after being on for a few hours my PC has made a single beeping noise, I'm curious as to what this could be an indication of? Cheers lads.

Aren't those just codes that play on start-up or when you're in the BIOS rather than when the computer is up and running?

They could be but I was hoping the link could shed some light on your problem past that before it becomes a startup problem.

Does it emit a short beep and then done? Or is it a sustained long beep that requires a hard reset of the computer? Hard to believe but there is a difference.

Please drop your DX log on us and we'll take a look.

Lastly, have you noticed any problems with any of your hard drives recently? Do you run a regular defrag every so often? That info might help. Good luck!

Just a single short beep and then it's done, only happened twice so far I find it a bit puzzling.

I'm afraid I don't know what my DX log is to give to you mate lol, if you could enlighten me as to where I could find it I'd post it.

The only thing that happened with my HD recently is the computer wouldn't recognise it and I had to constantly restart the computer and reset the primary boot device to the hard drive. I just unplugged the cables and plugged them back in and that seems to be the issue resolved though so that's probably some irrelevant information.

Be careful, this might be the first sign of a bios corruption. Make sure you have a flashable device with the bios you use handy, just in case.

    http://shoguntotalwar.yuku.com/topic...-X-Diagnostics for reference.

From past experience long before these "smart" BIOS, a harddrive not being recognized was usually a harddrive that's died or a BIOS that died. In those days, it was a dead BIOS more than a dead harddrive.

I can't tell what kind of of motherboard or computer you have but updating its drivers may help your case if you have reinstalled Vista lately.

Did you have any blue screen lately? At least the hdds can be relatively checked for errors. Try to use one of those programs that verify for errors in the hdd. And remember to have the latest or the current bios in a flashable drive. Also check if there are any lights on, in the motherboard associated or not with the beep.

Nah mate no blue screens, I'll just update my drivers, back-up important stuff and hope for the best I guess.

    Cheers lads.

Try resetting the BIOS to optimized settings. Also, find your motherboard's manual somewhere online, they usually have the beep patterns explained.

If it turns out to be nothing, and it's just annoying, you can usually remove the speaker.

Triple posts: when you just don't want your thread to die.

Anyway, it turns out the issue (for the aforementioned flat-out breaking at least) was the DVD drive, it literally caused my computer to not boot and let out beep codes whenever I turned it on.

I was completely unaware that a DVD drive could do that, I would have assumed the PC would have booted as normal and just not recognise the drive or something if it was broken. unsure if this was the cause of the original beeps I heard mind you.
