Medieval 2:Total War encountered an unspecified error and will now exit
I'm getting this error when I run MIITW (DVD). Re-installed multiple times. Same error with or without patches. Kingdoms works fine.
UAC is off.
It's installed outside program files.
Drivers are up-to-date.
dxdiag will show daemon tools. I also tried running it with the virtual drive uninstalled but still got the error.

Re: Medieval 2:Total War encountered an unspecified error and will now exit
Wow, I seem to get ideas of my own exactly after I post the problems on these fora... Happened earlier today in the Shogun forum.
I will post the solution for those who might be encountering this problem on an Asus mobo.
The culprit is, yet again, Virtu MVP. Even if HyperFormance is turned off (which was enough to make Shogun 2 work in Dx11), you need to open Virtu MVP Control Panel, go to Applications and remove the Medieval 2 entry. Or better still, just outright uninstall this software. It seems to be an utter thorn in the flesh.

Re: Medieval 2:Total War encountered an unspecified error and will now exit
You still have Daemon Tools installed or at least one of its virtual drives mounted.
Try it without it.
In Nvidia Control Panel, be sure it is set to Maximum Performance or something close, not auto, power saving, etc. I have a feeling Optimus does not know which to use and the game will run on the 4000, not good but will run.
Edit: Much of thiese virtual programs run counter to games, their publishers, and the DRMS the publishers use. I gave up when XP was released.

Re: Medieval 2:Total War encountered an unspecified error and will now exit
None of these mobo goodies seem to work as advertised. Last month, I had a problem with homegroup computers not being able to access my files. Turns out the culprit was Asus' Network iControl and the problem went away as soon as I turned it off. Go figure.
Anyway, thanks for your help, Ron.
