Default A multiplayer mod- will you play it?

    Hello,

It has been long ago since I had THIS idea in mind, that suggested a mod for Rome:TW concentrated on the multiplayer aspect of the game, featuring a balanced tournament ground: unit-wise, map-wise, faction-wise (etc.) for the 8 years old game, that included a friendly competitive community that holds tournaments, ladders, leagues and even offers money rewards if this thing succeed.
That "vision" died through the years, But hope has sprang again with the joyful announcement of the release of TW:Rome2.

The core idea is a balanced mod for online gaming, that works on a paper-scissors-rock system, where nobody has the advantage and only skill, talent and strategy wins the battle(as opposed to vanilla and\or other mods where the Gauls stand no chance against the Romans).
Tournaments and fertile ground for competition is easily arranged, and as I said, if this thing lifts off, money prizes are no fiction.

A faction and unit rosters and the basics already exist, the only question remains:
    Will you play it?

I'd like to hear your opinions

3 to 5 factions only? That is going to get old fast.

i think the old Rome was already challenging enough. if you consider additional map packs and custom rules it was ok. do not think we need a mod for RPS system in multiplayer.
if someone cares he can try doing a Rome mod for Shogun 2

A Rome custom battles/multiplayer mod for Shogun 2 would indeed be great, but I think CA doesn't allow versions with modified MP stats to enter the Steam servers...

    I tend to disagree.
The idea is to make the game suitable for online gaming similar to Warcraft, StarCraft, Generals, CoH, RUSE and the like just with TW mechanics, so yes, that means a mod, or a pack if you like of a balanced custom battle(RTS) rosters and a set of rules.

What keeps a game alive is it's multiplayer and rightfully so. Don't get me wrong- I'm the last person to miss TW's superiority when it comes to it's campaigns(the fact that I'm still playing the series since Rome's demo release speaks for itself), but a multiplayer dynamics, a human opponent who responds rationally to your movements on the battlefield is never the same. See the games I mentioned above for proof. And I'm not even getting into FPS games(CS, CoD, BF and my beloved old W:ET).

A 3 to 5 faction roster will not get old because the aspiration is to find your own favorite military method and professionalize with it, just like a "Terran player"(for example) in SC. Can you imagine a match between two masterminds when each has perfected its own strategy and tactics for months and years with a proven maneuvering skills with each his own faction tested against other human generals? With live coverage, audience, commentators and aftermatch report, Can it ever get old? Can Chess get old?
Thats my "vision"- not a minimized "well I'm bored, lets look for a match through steam", but a grand fertile ground of tournaments, leagues and an organized competitve community for such things.
There's probably something wrong with me if I'm the only one seeing the greatness in that.

In addition, I don't get why you suggest making a Roman era mod for Shogun2 when Rome2 is already in the making...

RTW had the greatest MP of all TW-games simply becuase it had 17 unique factions + 3 Roman clone factions, which meant that every battle you played in a day would be really different, that doesn't really happend in Shogun 2 for example.

Yes, but it's code was broken. Having played with a number of friends using voice communication programs proved the match wasn't synced right. Just watch a replay a number of times to see what I mean.

Also, having 20 different factions doesn't really count when all except the Romans aren't considerable since, as I said, the Gauls aren't a match for the Romans, and the Greeks don't stand a chance against a Silver Shield and Cataphract spamming player. I mean, yeah, trying to fight Spartans with Warbands is challanging but it would be like watching the World Cup final with a team of Messis against your local football team. Winning a battle when all odds are in your favor is not really "superme excellence".
Balance is what I suggest, so you can find out who's the greatest commander, not who's a better faction chooser.

The synch was and is fine, how it was before 1.5 I don't remember. But the few times it desynched it explicitly told you so, but it did not desynch often.

You considering the Romans to be the greatest faction pretty much tells me that you got no idea of what you are talking about and spam is not an issue if you play according to CWB or TWPL. As for most powerful MP faction: Egypt by far.
