As far as I know he could use the master edition on its own, but if he wanted to utilise crossfire, he would need to have a slave card aswell as the master card.

As well as a CrossFire main board.

I have a Radeon 1900XT as well, but not the crossfire edition. You can still do it with 2 of the Xts as long as you have an Xfire mobo right? My book and newegg where I bought it said this one was Xfire ready, even though its not the Xfire "edition"

Well if its Xfire ready, im sure it will have to be an Xfire edition card...
And Im also sure that you would need a master and slave card to work Xfire, or else what would be the point if any old ATI card would work?

    Overclockers says
Crossfire Edition is a master card and is compatible with all brands of X1900 slave cards.
I think that the crossfire edition card is the master card. If you have a non-crossfire edition card, then you have the standard 1900XT. In order to now get crossfire you need a crossfire mobo and the crossfire edition card. You only need one crossfire edition card to act as the master, and then any other card provided its in the same "family" as the master card (such as 19** cards)

So, would any X1900 variant be able to act as a slave card?

FYI read the comparison between Crossfire and SLI. SLI is looking much better.
