Default Favored Play Style in FOTS

Do most players like to modernize, or play a traditional game? (I'm guessing most will vote for the first option) And how much do you modernize? For me, fighting for the Old Ways is the best, its great to teach a Modern Army that the sword is mightier than the gun! Unless they have artillery...

    Mostly modern:
I win battles with my Line infantry, but without support of my loyal Katana/yari inf/cav my Line would never get change for victory

Also in siege fights in fun to bring completly traditional army, it is also the best choice for it!

The problem with FoTS is that there's no real incentive to stay traditional. It's slightly easier to maintain happiness, but that's about it. I think there should be a research tree devoted to traditional combat, buildings, culture.(Even though having to research something traditional is counter-intuitive.) It just would give some additonal strategy options with staying traditional versus just gimping yourself for the sake of roleplay.

To answer the OP, I only really shoot for two technologies: the foreign trade port and armstrong guns. Everything else is just for kicks. Once I get an ironclad and armstrong guns, AI slaughter is sure to follow. I have never found any real advantage in maxing out the research trees other than just for the sake of it. By the time I could get gatling guns, the game is pretty much over. Same is true for all the other tier 4 techs.

I always like to be fully developed, with nearly everything researched. I like modern units, and the more developed the more money I make. Albeit, I get rebellions more often, but I can afford a moderately sized garrison in the region.

i try a mix of traditional and modern units when i play because it keeps my people happy somewhat and allows for a flexible army that can deal with most armies with ease

Firstly, I chose Level 3 Modernisation option because I have not managed to fully modernize till yet. I like to play modern units, but I sincerely dislike the combination of Cannons and Rifles + Katanas and armours.

Secondly, I have tried a completely traditional campaign, so I chose that option too. But I cannot manage to do much because I really don't know what to do (or how to play) in traditional campaign.

I play base Shogun 2 at my friend's house, since I have not got the base game till yet. But it seems that base game is much easier on 'traditional' because EVERYONE is 'traditional' in FoTS sense.

In single player it's just a rush till those glorious shogunate troops and kneel fire. Accuracy through volume and all that. I use early troop at first, but after that, it's all guns.

In multi, the little that I do play, I tend to use a balanced mixed, it just gives you more flexibility and oppertunities to exploit.

For my first campaign I have gone fully modern. For the second I will try to be fully traditional and see how it goes.

I hate to say it, but I totally modernise. I wanted to stay traditional, but the game actually makes it hard to stay traditional. I just tend to build the next thing cos the game `says so` and before I realise it I`m modern. I`m not even sure how to stop it.

I also get put off by the stupid archers that can shoot further than guns. If they didn`t I would actually try harder to stick out traditional.

If it helps, they changed that in Total War Battles

So archers are more realistic in Total war battles than Shogun 2 FOTS itself!

And all they need to do is simply change those ranges (or make it optional). CA are a stubborn bunch when they want to be.

    Still not getting Battles.

It's possible to mod the range right? I mean, i guess from a gameplay perspective it gives you a reason to even bother recruiting them, but all in all I think making them able to fire faster than the muzzle loading rifles the majority of troops use would have been a bonus enough.
