This has been very fascinating for me as of late. I want to know more about this phenomenon, and would like to start a scientific discussion about it.
Does anyone have any resources that would help me find more about this thing? We should examine some different theories and prospective explanations. I just want to know what made this noise. It's really bugging me.
1. Animal - Many informed folk on the subject believe the sound was animal in origin. It fits the sound profile of some large organism, but it would have to be bigger than any animal we've ever known. (this is my favorite theory, as it would just be so awesome to discover something like this)
2. Ice calving - After all, it was just under a thousand miles from the antarctic continent. Could it be a piece of ice separating from a berg and falling into the water?
3. Earthen - Perhaps a deep sea movement such as a volcano or earthquake could have produced such a noise. Only problem is the bloop doesn't really match up with the profile of something like this.
4. Man made - Some people have said it could be some sort of underwater explosion of military hardware. The defense department says no such thing happened. But could it be something they abandoned a long time ago? Perhaps a piece of world-war-era naval equipment that drifted down a bit too far and blew up? Maybe the military was responsible, and any information relating to the matter is classified.
5. Other - Perhaps it was something completely different. I would love to hear some alternatives.
It is said that there is more known about the surface of the moon than there is about our own ocean. This is a prime example.
