    Default Rowers for galleys?

I don't want to do again the debate slaves or not slaves (in a previous topic we saw that there were slaves but most of the rowers were free men), but it would be so great if we could see rowers in the galleys + special animations when galley sink!!!
In shogun 2 when you zoom into the ships there are no rowers like in a ghost ship but for Rome 2, I think it would really add something to immersion, imagine zooming into the ship and hearing the drums and the noise of the rows...
    What do you think?

Of course, specially the lighter, top open ones!
And no, they weren't slaves in it's majority, at least for warships it was quite the other way around.

In shogun II there is rowing, in NTW and ETW there are many soldiers serving the cannons and mooving into the ships, when you zoom inside... Everybody can run naval battle in those games...So, I really don't think that could be a problem for a computer to run it, specially if the rowers do the same movement, same animation.

Yes true, BUT in shogun II and the few ships in Empire had oars, but no men behind them!
and we have all seen the ships in the pictures, and I like that you are not able to see them, saving memory on my computer.

So I have maybe misunderstand what the tread is about, but I love the ancient ships, but I do not care for the smelly plebs who make the oars move.

Rowers would also fight when required, so that would be nice to have in game.
Slaves would be used for commercial ships and private yachts, military vessels were obliged to have freedmen as rowers from the second Punic war on at least. There was even one incident where hundreds of slaves had to be freed before they could be allowed berth.
The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are so certain of themselves, but wiser people are full of doubts.

Shogun 2 Total war already did something like that.

The boats would have a compliment of marines who are armed with swords and arrows while the rowers supply the manpower to move the ship but can also fight.

When the boats board each other, the rowers also join the fight as well.

Rowers where expected to fight if the ship where in that dire need, it was like I don't know, recurring to the mess staff to fight on the front line. In any case I'm sure we'll see them.

have you seen the new screenies??? if no, go see them then you'll notice that the ships rowers are inside the ship, therefore, unnoticeable, but as people have stated i expect them to show up if the ship is in trouble

the galleys in Empire and Napoleon TW were a bit boring with these invisible rowers. Animated Rowers would make ships look more dynamic.

Many warships during antiquity had open decks, similar like the galley from later eras.

exactly, galleys without rowers are so boring. If they do open galleys and rowers I think they have to do the same in Rome 2. If there are rowers of course they have to look like rowers not as soldiers!
I think the question about rowers is the question about living naval battles. In TW, in naval battles, the soldiers on the boat don't moove as statues, even when there are cannon boals flying over their heads. Rowers will bring this life that lack so much in naval battles and make the thing so boring. In a general way, naval battles lack of specific animations for the soldiers: animation when they are under the fire of the ennemy, real good animation when repairing, animation when sinking, when the boat is burning, soldiers in flammes etc.
I think the all problem is making TW naval battles more living, more immersive. Not a fight between ships of wood but a fight, before all, between men.

there will still be sailers on the ship, its just the useless peasant who is cut out.
and to the point of the longship! the rowers onboard on those ship was train for combat!
but think about the game mechanic what the hell can the troops do then all the rowers are dead?
they will just be sitting ducks!
and the longship what if only 2 men is left? will they still be able to move the ship around?
nope, but the game will maybe not think about it, and the ship will carry on.

the problem of the number of men :

in a land battle you have artillery and 20 versus 20 units and even 40 vs 40 in FOTS. People use to play between 8000 to 16000 men more or less. In a naval battles you have the ships 20vs 20 or 10 vs 10 and the crew is 50 to 200 men per ship. so in battle you have more or less 2000-3000 men on the ships (small with little crew and bigger ones) and often not mooving. So adding rowers, 150 to 200 men per ship would not be a problem i think, and besides, they would be into the ship (so when you are not zooming in, the game won't load the animations or models).

If there are 2 men left, of course, like always, the ship will have surrendered for a long time.

The only time rowers matter is when they tire or die. break the oars to injure the rowers and disrupt the sync of the galley in order to cripple it or chase the enemy to tire him and then attack him. Just like wolfpacks do.

Hey, how about an ability to name the ships?

In Empire and Napoleon you already have that ability, but I don't think its there in Shogun 2. Hopefully they will bring it back.

As for rowers I don't think it essential but I would appreciate it.

I hope they do show up.

It will make sea battles more looking alive then just two plastic boats standing one beside another and shooting arrows.

I hope they will add rams to.
