Game lagging, wasn't before ....

So yeah, basically, I played this probably the good part of a year back and I was playing with 2gb Ram and Vista. I just played with 2.1, large units mostly and didn't lag.

I'm now finding with 2.5 or at least my new install, that I lag during battles even with large troops.
And now I have 4GB ram and a very strong graphics card.

Any ideas as to why I might be having issues?

Your RAM & Graphics card have changed - and therefore I have to ask whether the base PC has as well?

If so, what was the old CPU Speed compared to the new one? RTW only uses the CPU speed, it knows nothing about modern graphics cards' abilities.

I don't know. I know the PC is much better than it was before, in all aspects.

Could this have something to do with my installation?

I installed RS2 , all 4 parts and then installed 2.5 ontop of it. Would that create problems?

Ok, just did a fresh install. When I run the first battle with Hannibal on large units/1 turn, I don't lag at all. I also bring a few reinforcements.

When I do 0-turn and huge with reinforcements, I lag alot, although my CPU is only at 35-40% usage and my RAM at around 70%. That's also using hi res unit models and highest unit textures. Not sure why I'm lagging so badly......

Go into Start menu and do this:

Control Panel\System and Security\System

Then tell me what your processor is

ohhhhhhh, 2.40 is the problem, i use a 3.30 GHz processor and i have seemless gameplay with the occasional spaz my game has
i think you should get at least 3.0GHz

press the windows + the r letter

type dxdiag

in the lower corner of the program there is a button to save the info on txt do it. and post it here or some screenshots of the various tabs

If you have the problem with a new install it might just be a problem with the preferences. e.g. turn vegatation detail down and see how it works then.

What does HighResDMB do?

Also, I can't run the PreferencesEditor Application /unable to open preferences txt

I've got a quad-core processor thats like 2.2ghz or something like that and it runs 2.5 with units at ultra and all graphics on high. I do turn shadows off, seems like a rather pointless use of system resources to me.

I just recently found out that Total War games only use one core... kind of lame, but this machine runs everything up to Shogun II really well. I'll probably be due for a new one when Rome 2 comes out. I can't wait!!!

it applies a high res pack.

your pc should work very well with the mod, the only major problem there would be the cpu.

what you can do is, clean uninstall your drivers and install new ones for the gpu, since you said you changed it. and after that you can use a program like ccleaner and clean the mess that its supposed to be in there.

I would also uninstall rtw and rs2 and install new, get your save files btw.

Don't forget that the game engine (exe) is very old - it dates from before 2004.

The game will only use a single core of memory and many features of modern (or nearly modern) GPUs are not used either.

Try runing things like IOBIT's GameBooster (free) software to stop many background services (Windows) while you are in 'game' mode.
