Default Charms end of year examination

Each of the students gets shown in to see James Elvric separately. The day before the exams start, a notice appears on the charms classroom detailing what they have to do. This is to ensure that those seen later on, aren't given an unfair advantage by knowing what they will have to do, while the earlier attendees have to do it without knowledge. Whether all the students see the notice though is a different matter...

Charms Examination All students in Charms will be faced a similar examination. Three spells will have to be chosen and proven proficient in in order to pass the examination. The examination makes fifty per cent of the years grades.

Firstly, each student will have to sufficiently demonstrate a versatile offensive spell. Higher marks will be given for more complex spells, but only one attempt at each spell will be allowed. Naturally the spell must come from the charms school of magic.

Secondly, each student will have to sufficiently demonstrate a defensive charm, or one that may be used to heal. Again higher marks will be given for more complex spells, but only one attempt may be allowed. Again the spell must come from the charms school of magic.

Thirdly, each student will, after the first two parts, have twenty minutes to write as complete an essay as possible on the Riddikulus charm. Attention should be made to covering the purpose, the casting, and the effect of the spell.

ooc; Right, let me explain it a little better. For the exam, i refer to the charms spells. They will be rolled based on your proficiency. When i write offensive spell, i mean one that you might use in a duel. So i'll leave it to your imaginations on how you can use it. But elaborate on it as i'll award the mark if its even half decent (ie Aguamenti, then explain it would be perfect against a salamander, that sort of thing. With the smallest bit of effort it shouldn't be too hard)
For defensive or healing, well you just have to look at the spell list to come up with plenty of ideas. It doesn't have to be original compared to everyone else, but the harder the spell, the better your mark - of course, the higher risk of it going wrong.
For the essay part of it, a paragraph is more than suffient, if you get desperate, copy and paste from the wiki, but originality would be nice
As i'm away from tomorrow i won't be giving your grades until probably monday, so you'll have until then to post. (i'll likely roll any posts that are posted before i leave)

The Riddikulus spell, also known as the boggart banishing spell, is an offensive charm used specifically against a boggart to negate it's effects. Thr spell causes the boggart (a shapeshifter) to assume a form that is funny to the caster negating its use of fear, its primary weapon. The caster must first acknowledge there worst fear thrn imagine it in a humorous way.

Lance starts with an offensive charm first. "Wingardium Leviosa" he whispers. He lifts up a large heavy chair and uses the charm to throw it.

Next he says "Augamenti" watching the water leave his wand then stopping.

He adresses the professor. "Either of the charms I used could have been used in offense or defense in a different situation and opponent". He leaves it at that.

Dominick stepped up to the plate, still questioning what he was going to to.

I know what I want to do for an offensive spell, and I have been practicing protego for months now. Only thing is that I don't know if it will work...since the first spell is going to be hard enough, better go with one I know will work.
    Dominick thought apprehensively.

Dominick then composed himself, took a real deep breath and exhaled. Then he began with a rather simple spell, as he chants a Hover Charm to throw a chair at the supposed assailant.
Then after feeling much more confident with himself, he decided to go with something a bit more difficult, but he managed to preform earlier in the school year "Incarnum Inflamarae!" he chants.
Then at the conclusion of his first attempt, Dom then chanted his healing spell, "Episkey!"

At the conclusion he looks at the Professor showing little opinion of how he did and smiled. "The hover charm has its uses depending one your proficiency and the objects around you. Getting a boulder or bus thrown at you mamay stun or at least distract an individual. Incarnum Inflamarae almost goes without explanation after seeing what you did with it to kick off the semester sir. Lastly, Episkey can be used to treat an array of physical wounds. Its quite versatile in its usage and serves as a good beginning point for anyone interested in helping others in both on and off the battlefield. "

The Riddikulus spell is one used the defend against a particularly nasty creature called a bogart. If caught unsuspecting, a bogart will terrorize you until you are a blubbering ball of psychological issues. This is because they possess the uncanny ability to take the shape of your worse fear. What the Riddikulus spell does, is turn the Bogart into something, (a thought, a figure) that you find instead greatly humorous. It is wise to keep caution however, because it is easy to lose focus once confronted by your worse fear.

OOc- be kind and dont forget that I managed to preform the fire spell well (not here yet but in class) in my overall final grade

Violeta walks in and bows to the Professor.

"Incarnum Inflamarae." She aims the spell up towards the ceiling, before aiming towards herself after making a small cut on her arm. "Vulnera Sanentur ".After hoping that spell works, she looks at a small ball-like object. "Carpe Retractum." She then turns to address the professor. "Incarnum Inflamarae, offensively is like the curse Incendio, sending a fireball towards the enemy that can also be used to create a defensive wall of fire to impede a opponent for some time. Or as a distraction as well. Vulnera Sanentur, is a advanced healing spell capable of mending wounds Episkey is unable to. Carpe Retractum can be used offensively if a opponent is in between the caster and a object, and defensively to get something to absorb an enemy's attack for the caster." She then sits to write the essay.

The charm Riddikulus, is the counter-spell for the magical creature known as a boggart that transforms into it's target's greatest fear, examples could be vampire..spider..werewolf..giant, or anything in truth. The charm is used to counter the boggart by transforming the caster's fear into a comedic mockery of it through any method the caster can think up when encountered by a Boggart, otherwise it is beloeved it has no effect on the boggart's transformation. Is considered to be a rather basic charm when compared to some others, but one that requires considerable focus to be used to it's maximum effect when encountering a Boggart.

When his turn came, after a small salutary nod to Prof. Elvric, Cecil opened with the Banishing Charm as his offensive spell.

Immediately afterward, he followed up with Colloshoo.

Turning to Prof. Elvric, he explained, "The Banishing Charm can be used to push an opponent away from oneself, and perhaps knock them off balance as well, or alternatively to push objects towards them instead. On the defensive, Colloshoo can be used to glue their feet to the ground; combined with the Banishing Charm, it can be used to render an opponent stuck a safe distance away from oneself."

20-minute essay: "The Riddikulus charm is a spell used exclusively for personal defense against Boggarts, magical creatures that take the form of its victim's greatest fear in a bid to paralyze them with fear and terrorize them into submission. The charm is used to transform the Boggart into the first laughable mockery of its would-be victim's fear that the victim can think of. It is a basic charm, but the caster should be cautious not to allow their fear to get the best of them before attempting it."

Aaron's first charm was Incarnum Inflamarae. "This charm sends a fireball from the wand. If you get hit by the fireball, well, it hurts." Then he tried the spell.
He then performs the Episkey charm, which would heal a wound if he did it right.

    Aaron's Essay
Riddikulus, also known as the Boggart-Banishing spell, is the most efficient spell at defeating a boggart. When a boggart appears in front of you, it will change its appearance to the thing which you fear most. After you cast a successful Riddikulus spell, it turns into something ridiculous. This makes the caster laugh, and since laughter is a boggart's greatest weakness, it would force the boggart back. The spell is relatively easy to use, but the boggart would usually scare the living hell out of you, so a considerable amount of willpower is required to carry out the spell successfully.

Demetri is nervous the end of the year is coming up and that means back to the orphanage. He did't want to go home but that wouldn't stop him from trying his best.
He thinks of a good offensive spell and decides to demonstrate the Riddikulus spell.
Riddikulus he exclaims thinking about the bullies he always had to deal with in womens clothing
now a healing spell he remembers reading about a good spell for treating broken bones. He hadn't practiced it much but decides to experiment.
    Ferula he says
Riddikulus is the charm used to defeat Boggarts. A Boggart is a creature that takes the shape of your worst fears. To properly use the Riddikulus spell you must not only face you fears but laugh at them. When attempting to cast a Riddikulus charm you imagine your worst fears and then find a way to make them funny. The sell forces the Bogart to physically manifest in this form. While this will weaken the Boggart it does not destroy itthe charm mearly chaanges the form to truly finish a boggart you must laugh at it. So while the Riddikulus spell is used to weaken a boggart it is not enough to truly defeat it.
Demetri hears "quills away please time is up" god he hoped he wrote enough I was so stressful he tried to remember everything he had ever read about boggarts and riddikulus

Incarnum Inflamarae! Lio used it as his offensive spell,

It is a fire spell, like Incedio, it could be used in a duel to hurt an enemy

Ferula!, This one was his healing one

This spell creates a split and a bandage, it is very useful when you broke a bone and you need immediate attention

    Essay:

    The Riddikulus Spell;

This spell is used to defend yourself against a Boggart. A boggart is magical creature that shift shapes in turn to become the greatest fear of the person that sees it.
    A boggart greatest weakness is laughter (the contrary of fear), so this spell changes the boggart into a funny form. To do this you must picture your fear, and then a way to make it amusing;

An example of this would be if your greatest fear are snakes, and you picture them as scarfs of a crazy old lady.

EDIT: Lio's proficiency in CHARMS: 10, thanks Trot, tough I have the same quantity

Atticus entered the room as Lio left, ready to begin his final exam. Entering, he held his wand to his mouth and muttered 'sonorus', dropping his voice to a whisper he continued

"Good morning professor" Hoping the voice magnification would work.

    He handed in his essay:

    Essay

The Riddikulus charm is an essential element of the arsenal of one attempting to clean or repair a house that has gone uninhabited. It is used to confuse and overwhelm bogarts, creatures that use a sense of determining our worst fears against us. When performed correctly, the witch or wizard must think of a way to banish their fears in such a way that induces laughter, such as imagining a snake on a greased floor, unable to move despite huge effort. The key to the spell's success is laughter, which confuses and ultimately banishes the pest.

Now in order to demonstrate a defensive spell, I will ask you to contemplate the advantages of potentially freezing an oncoming attacker, or creating a wall of ice between you and your attacker. When combined with a charm conjuring water, it could be quite an effective defense.

Atticus demonstrated by casting his first spell "auguamenti" he repeated and followed quickly with the freezing charm, hoping that as he flicked his wand in a broad oval, the water would freeze and provide some sort of protection.

Now, it is my opinion that charms are inherently defensive forms of magic, but they may also be used offensively in combination. I prefer to use the example of a rather simple offensive charm, the hover charm. When cast with enough force, it can enable a wizard to control their attacker by removing him from the ground. Then you could set him down wherever you like...into flames, water, sharp rocks...

Atticus cast the hover charm on an oaken desk, attempting to demonstrate the ability to lift large objects

Henry entered the classroom, handing his essay to the teacher after greeting him quickly.

The easy part's done, he thought, and proceeded to demonstrate his skills.

"Now... professor, I will attempt the following offensive spells," he was breathing heavily, and sweating, nervous.

"I will start with an easy one," he said, as he pulled his wand out and shook it in front of the dummy. "Wingardium Leviosa!" he yelled, as he attempted to lift and shake the dummy from the floor.

    ---

For his defensive skills, Henry took a different position, and said,

"I'll try a spell I have been practicing for a while, though I confess I have not yet... well... achieved it," he said, embarrassed.

    He turned to the dummy,

"Wingardium Leviosa!" he yelled again, only this time he attempted to lift a small wooden desk in an attempt to use it as a shield.

    Essay:

The riddikulous charm is a must have in any wizard's reservoir, mostly because it's used for defense against a very nasty magical creature: the boggart. A boggart is a magical creature capable of switching its form into that of a person's deepest fear, in order to harm the person in question.

By using the ridikulous charm, a wizard may defend himself by turning his fear into a comical sight. To achieve a succesful ridikulous spell, the following steps must be taken:

    - First, one must acknowledge their greatest fear.
    - Second, the caster must modify the image that comes to his mind, but modifying it to make it into something amusing.

Following these steps, and saying the words "Ridikulus!" the boggart will turn into the amusing image, and be defeated.

Evangelina entered the room, she was certain she had never been this nervous in her life, heart pounding and her body shaking all over. Her hands and oddly the tip of her nose felt really cold.

Nigel enters ready to do his exam.

First I shall show you both my offensive and defensive skill at the same time. The reason I say this is because the one spell will work just as effectively both ways.

Having said that he points his wand at the teachers desk.

Wingardium Leviosa! Using this spell in combination with an object such as this I am able to both attack the opponent by throwing the desk towards them, or defend myself by putting the desk in the direct path of a spell casted to me.

Using the 20 minutes to write an essay until the last second Nigel begins.

    Essay
Riddikulus is a charm that is used in defence against a Boggart. It causes the creature to assume a form that is humourous to the caster, thereby counteracting the Boggart's ability to terrorise. To cast, the spellcaster must first acknowledge what they fear the most (as it will most likely what the Boggart will take form of) and then visualize it into something amusing.
