    Default Late Bodyguard units

At what point do early bodyguards turn into late bodyguard units? I know that once you build a citadel that you can immediately start buying generals with late bodyguards, but what about your family members and adopted family members? And if there is some sort of point where early bodyguards switch over to late bodyguards, do the early generals/family members that you already own just convert to late?

i think when you get access to late general bodyguards, then you can retrain the early bodyguards into late bodyguards in the citadel. kinda like retraining for armour upgrades.

Unfortunately, family members will never become late bodyguards, only the ones recruited from citadels.
They are two different units, and you cannot retrain one unit into another.
When creating family members, the game will always select the first Bodyguard unit listed in the EDU, which is the early one.

I suppose one could create a new EDU, where the Early and Late Bodyguards swap place so the Late ones will be the first entry, and then manually swap the two files once the appropriate time comes. That way new Family members SHOULD be spawned as Late Bodyguards. Existing ones will remain as Early.

There is a submod for this that changes the stats of the early bg unit around 1350-1400. I did it manually for mine. Look it up in the submod section/

Can you retrain bodyguards for your generals in 6.4? Playing Early Era Scotland, I don't see advanced cavalry (Feudal Knights) available when you research Earl's or King's Stables. Do those cavalry units unlock at the historical time in the game? When I look at the building tree, I don't see any advanced cavalry reflected in the unit list for those buildings. I just see hobilars and border horse, even for the King's Stables.

Also, when I took over Nottingham, the Mailed Knights were 'greyed out' in the Recruitment tab..???!!! I'm not getting the research tree for SS.

Whats not to understand? They were greyed out because they have like 15 turns replenishment rate, the better knights get unlocked later on, and i have bad news for you - since you are playing early era Scotland the first 150 years will mostly be spear militia, highlanders and other crappy units, i suggest you take all of Britain and try to stay neutral until you get better units - go on crusades(you get lots of powerful units from them as mercs, just try to keep them intact). Start building your settlements and make a web of diplomacy - ally with more distant nations like Genoa, Denmark and so on - they will help you when you attack the nations that are between you and them (Norway for Denmark and France for Genoa).

Thanks. I was hoping that was an unlocking mechanic. I saw the replenishment rate, but the building doesn't show I'm supposed to get Mailed Knights. Do the available units change also based on the size of the settlement? My other castles have the same building, but do not have Mailed Knights available- basic Stables, except that they are Wooden Castles while Nottingham is a Castle. This is my first game with SS, so I'm used to seeing the units each building provides regardless of era.

All I have left are southern Britain- London, Exeter and Winchester. I allied with France to help with Britain, as well as the HRE, Byzantines and Poland. My Diplomat died enroute to Italy- I have to send another one.

You are EXACTLY right sir, the unit availability DOES change based on settlement size! It's a bit easy to miss, so don't worry, I think I definitely did the first few dozen times playing BUT if you check in the "Castle" or "Castle Upgrade" building tree, you can see how the bigger castle upgrades will unlock more units. For example, Wooden Castle doesn't get you very much (I don't think), but the first stone castle upgrade will allow Mailed Knights or Miles to be recruited. In SS, the stable units don't do much in the early era besides allow you to recruit more light cavalry and speed up the replenish rate. In late era, this might change, but I haven't made it there yet. BLOODY hell!

Yeah sometimes diplomats can live to be 100, other times they trip over a tree root and break their neck. Definitely go for Genoa in Italy, they're strong. AND the Pope, if you wanna be a puppetmaster of sorts
--Fight, and you may die. Run and you'll live....at least a while.
And dying in your beds, many years from now, would you be willing,
to trade ALL the days from this day to that, for ONE chance, JUST ONE CHANCE!
to come back here and tell our enemies, that they may take our lives...
...but they'll never take OUR FREEDOM!!!

THAT is the confusing part: The Stables Upgrade Tree only shows Hobilars and Border Horse, whether I click on the Stables or the King's Stables. I'm used to seeing the future upgrades from the tree even in 1150 AD, not a dynamically changing list. I have a Bradygames M2TW paperback guide so knowing units aren't an issue. But I know there ARE unit changes in SS, so the guide will not 100% reflect all of the game units.
