Default No more American accents please CA

I dont know about anyone else on here, but I for one hope with a burning intensity that CA don't include any American accents in Rome 2. I'm not having a go at Americans here, but in Rome 1 it kinda lost its edge having Romans as American accented soldiers and advisors etc, it almost ruined the feel of the game for me, especially considering if youre making a game about a 2000 year old Italian Empire that embraced many EUROPEAN, AFRICAN and ASAIN regions, where the living hell did the American accent come from? 1800 years or more in the future apparantly.
If you notice, the vast majority of successful historic war films, usually only the cheesy ones use American accents, in Troy for example, the few American accents there are completely ruin the feel of the film for me, as American accents seem simply too corny to get away with for something of this type (thanks to the dominant position in the modern entertainment industry), possibly because America wasn't discovered untill 600 years ago and wasn't even a nation untill 240 years ago. Moreover the proper "standard" English seems to suit, as accentless as possible (more upperclass British) or much rather a proper old Latin style lingo (like in Shogun 2, they all speak Japanese bar the advisors)
PLEASE NO MORE AMERICAN ACCENTS!!! THIS IS NOT AN UNDERBUDGET HERCULES EPISODE!
    Rome 2 Rome 2 Rome 2 Rome 2 Rome 2 Rome 2 Rome 2 Rome 2, that is all.

Okay, so you'd rather play the entire game in Latin?

Or more accurately, have the majority of characters speaking and writing Greek, since Latin was not the most common language in the Empire? Would that be accessible for you? Nice Greek alphabet?

Everyone has an accent. If it was an English accent, people would complain about that. If you want to authentically record all dialogue in the correct dialect and make a mod, go ahead. But don't complain about something as simple as a voice.

It aids gameplay if the user easily understands what is being said & going on.

Whilst certain accents can grate for some, as long as it is comprehensible, I can live with it.

I'd rather be able to understand what my general is saying instead of having to read subtitles, so nah. Go with 'American Accents' (I'm not even sure what that is, considering the US is a country of 310 million people with largely different backgrounds and different accents in every region)

Yes, I would rather play the whole game in Latin. Its not just the fact that its in English, is specifically because its an AMERICAN accent. No film or game set in that kind of era that wants itself taken seriously ever uses an American accent. If you don't like that, oh dear. "don't go complain about something as simple as a voice". Sorry, shall I not post my concerns about a Total War game on the Total War Centre? And a rather valid one at that, it can be make or break for a game that shouts THE DAY IS OURS in some horribly squeeky American voice as you watch Roman soldiers march over a Parthian army, CA has too much attention now for that kind of cock-up.

Bloody hell, my main point was I would rather it was the most standard form of English (the language) available (upper-middle class British) than Latin, but even Latin would be preferable to the game losing so much credibility

*almost everyone hasn't read the first post correctly "Moreover the proper "standard" English seems to suit, as accentless as possible (more upperclass British)", I would prefer it to be in English, just not an American accent as it could not be more out of place if it tried, at least English has been around for centuries, from a land that was at least know to the Roman Empire (then a part of) at the time, and yes, English is the universal SECOND language, which is why if any accent, it should be British, that is to say it sounds by far the most authentic

Largest battles in the franchises history, best graphics of any TW title, more diverse factions than ever before, largest battle maps, naval-land combined battles, the ability to take cities with a navy alone, one of the largest campaign maps ever (next to Empire), more likely renewed modding support (see: S2:Tw mod summit), most money CA has ever spent making a game, and one of the most anticipated strategy games of the last decade...

But it's going to be ruined because of "American accents"

Right and you're not listening to what I'm saying. If Romans had Australian accents I would still play it, and if anything you are further arguing my point, yeah theyve put that much effort in, why would they want to ruin it with completely out of place, and frankly tacky (Rome 1) American accents, it just doesn't fit

So you just generally dislike American accents? That's a first. Who knows, there's a lot of companies distinguishing 'American' and 'British' English and giving you the option for either. Perhaps 'British' English will be one of the alternative languages to play in, seeing as CA is a British company I wouldn't doubt it anyway. But nonetheless you shouldn't let 1 small, tiny thing ruin a massive game like this.

And the hostility you're getting from people is tied to the fact a lot of people would prefer English and saw this as another 'speak latin pls' topics. Sorry for the misunderstandings.

No offense or anything, but I think I would get rather annoyed to constantly hear the actual latin language/accent constantly. Since in reality it's basically Spanish (or sounds most similar to it to people who only speak English), with a few differences.

The British accent is most appealing to the majority of people ~ it's smooth, can sound very calm, or very brave and inspiring. Even though it really sounds nothing like the Latin accent, it's all a matter of preference and CA will choose whichever the majority enjoys most.

so you rather have the general be like "Oi mate? what do you think you are doing there? I say that cataphract formation you have there is the dogs bollucks."

than: "What in tarnation are you do'in there partner? tat cataphract formation does look mighty fine though."

No because NONE of what you just said is standard English. Go back to school. You are demostrating a massive amount of ignorance towards English, I assume you are not English or "Oi Mate" and "Dogs Bollucks" would not have occured to you unless very ill-educated when attempted to write using standard English.

No, I'm perfectly aware of the diverse range of American accents, as I'm well aware of the even more British accents, which is why I keep making the point of it being accentless standard English which is exactly how it is spoken by the middle upper class of Britain, any day to day British accent would be just as bad if not worse, imagine someone from Liverpool directing your Legions?

    personally i wouldn't mind

I dont seem to see any american accents in rome since i still play it all the time. just because the roman general has a deep and commanding voice doesnt mean he has an american accent. he just pronounces his As and Rs like an american which would be "Standard English"

also the advisers that drove me crazy had brit accents

About the idea of "upperclass" a british accent. I would agree the advisor/generals should have this (at least for the romans) because that accent type is most closely accounted with high society/oppression/ imperious(ness?). Anyway I would prefer the british accent for generals, but I think a mix throughout would be good.

Nothing about British English is authentic in this context. Moreover, the majority of native English speakers do so with an Indian or American accent. You are most certainly in the minority. In any case this is a fairly insignificant topic to fuss about.

What, may I ask, is the difference between an "upper class English accent" and an "American accent" in terms of suitability? The upper class English you're thinking of came into being in the 1800s, around the same time the American accents used in FOTS did.

It seems to me like this is a pet peeve, perhaps you have some disdain for "American" accents and a fetishist desire to hear upper class English whereever you go.

Remember that in Rome they tried to have accented voices for the faction you were playing? Remember what that caused?

    A. A lot of offence

    B. A rather cheesy feeling of "it's just the same guy talking funny"

Face it, whatever accent it is, it's going to sound wrong.

But please, if you'd prefer it to be in Latin, go ahead and make the mod. No one's stopping you. I'll even download it.
