Default RTR crashes upon trying to start new campaign

I bought the RTW Gold pack from Gamestop and installed Rome:TW then Barbarian Invasion. I knew about the bug that would make Rome:TW revert to 1.3 after installing BI, so I patched back to 1.5, and then patched BI to 1.6. After that, I made a backup of the data folder, downloaded and then installed RTRPE 1.4 from http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=55808 , making sure I installed to "The Creative Assembly/Rome Total War" instead of "Activision/Rome Total War"

After that, I proceeded to install the RTRPE 1.6 patch. I fired up RTR, it went through everything fine, until I went to new campaign, clicked on Roman Republic and started their campaign. Immediately the game crashed to desktop, with no error message displayed.

I was skimming through the topics to see if anyone had a problem similar to mine, but found nothing so far. I made sure that in the preferences.txt file that firsttimeplay variable was set to FALSE.

    Can anyone help me?

Did you allow the RTR Platinum v1.6 patch installer to delete the map.rwm files by choosing the install location to be the folder where RTR Platinum v1.4 was already installed in? The problem you describe sounds like the map.rwm file of RTR Platinum v1.4 is not deleted. Check the following locations...
    1. RTW\data\world\maps\base
    2. RTW\data\world\maps\campaign\imperial_campaign
    3. RTW\data\world\maps\campaign\base

The last location is an old mistaken install location that I do not think the RTRPE v1.4 install used, but I'm currently at work and can not verify.

In the main RTW folder, you should find a file named "campaign_map_reset.bat" that was placed there by the RTR Platinum v1.6 patch installer. Double left-click this file in Windows Explorer and it will run and delete any of these possible map.rwm files for you as long as its run from the main folder, not from the data sub-folder. Also, when RTR Platinum starts up you should have seen the RTR Platinum loading screen that says "RTR Platinum v1.6" in the bottom right-hand corner. If you didn't see this, RTR Platinum is not installed correctly.

Thank you, I ran the batch file like you said and it now works properly. I now remember making the mistake of unchecking the option to run the batch file after the 1.6 patch installation was finished, on the thought that it would run the game if I left it checked. Thank you very much!

I now have te same problem, I checked the loading thingy and I ran the batch file more than once and checked the map.rmv files manually.

Could it be cause I still have some saved campaign from before I tried to play RTR Platinum?? If so, how do I delete these saves??

i have a similar/same problem. i've rtw not barbarian invasion. all patches installed, rtr installed. ran the .bat, checked manually...

i try to start a campaign and it crashes halfway through load.

i've also no idea how to uninstall in order to try again, but i doubt tht that is the problem

I also successfully installed RTR Platinum version and the installation went smoothly, but when I attempted to start a new campaging/historical battle/custom battle, the game crashed and went to my desktop. I realize this issue was adressed earlier on this forum, but in my case all I have installed is the orginal RTW not BI, as well as the fact that I tried searching for the file campaign_map_reset.bat to delete it but was unable to find it. If anyone could please help me adress this issue I would much appreciate it.

What you need to remove is the map.rwm file. The campaign_map_reset is a batch file that does that for you. It should be located in your main rome - total war folder. Double clicking it should do the job.

I was able to find the map.rwm file you were refering to, but there 3 of them (imperial campagin, base(Crogram), and sons_of_mars) and so I was wondering which of the 3 I am supposed to delete

Note that RTR 6 Gold is for use with the RTW 1.2 patch, when you have BI installed you could also download the newer versions of the mod

those files hold data relating to your game but they are re-generated if deleted.
Therefore if you update files, the new map file is generated based on your current data/files

If you update files and dont delete, then the map file can contain data from the previous set of game files.
As an example, lets say you added a new unit to be recruited from a building in the edb. If you dont delete the map file, your new game wont (or may not) recognise your changes.

however delelting the map file causes it to be regenerated based on the changes made.

This is why some changes are classed as "Not Save Game Compatable". This is where the change is too dramatic, and an example of which might be a new map.
