Why.... do they all hate me???

Well, today I was playing the Chosokabe campaign on hard, and, i got completely ANNIHILATED.
I will tell you what happened:
First of, I killed the rebel army and moved my army up the the north to capture the other rebel city like normal. After I captured it, the other clan on the island (i can`t remember any of the Japanese names lol) declared war on me.
A few turns later, a 12 unit army appeared at my capital. Since my campaigning army was up in the northern city healing and suppressing the unhappy populace, my capital got taken and my shogun killed.
For some reason the enemy clan moved his army back to his provinces, so I re-took my capital. He sent his army (larger this time) to attack it, but my troops valiantly defended it and wiped out the enemy army.
However, in this time, 4 other clans, for no reason, declared war on me. As I was massing an army at my capital to take he rest of my island (shikoku?) one of the stupid enemy clans sent a huge army to attack my northern city.


So, why do all the other clans hate me? I started the game on hard, expecting a challenge, but that was just ridiculous. 4 clans declared war on me for no reason, I didn`t even attack anybody. Can someone tell me what I did wrong? I can`t think of anything I could have done to save myself...

on hard, other clans will prey on undefended settlements very fast. There is a huge gap in difficulty between normal and hard in shogun 2

What's your honour level, did you break any treaties, have you established any trade agreements, did you loot Iyo province?

Diplomacy becomes very important at higher difficulties. Keep your Daimyos honour up and try to get treaties with dependable clans. If you have to pay 2K for an alliance and trade agreement it may be the best 2K you spend. Equally, don't forget to sell clans trade agreements or military access but be careful with the latter.

I've played Hattori several dozen times on hard, and I've become convinced that the game is rigged so that Takeda and Hojo will automatically declare war once the game gets to a certain point regardless of how good my relationship is with them and regardless of having the highest level of honor, and despite having no provinces that they require for victory. I've tried reloading numerous times to try different things, including giving gifts of money and marriages, but no matter what a very friendly alliance turns to war in one turn. On normal the factions are so passive that the game is pointless.
