Lance had always felt a conncection to the dark side of magic. As a boy he had often watched his parents practice it. Lance knew dark magic was demonized because it was powerful not because it was bad. He needed to feel and control that power. Lance's choice of allegiance would have been mirky if his parents had survived. They were dead. Lance threw himself into studies but that couldn't fill the void. He was drawn by the black and dark aura of black magic. It drew him as a flame draws a moth to a candle. He wanted to learned to live and breath dark magic. He wanted to be simply immersed in it. Where to begin he thought. Then he new. He had to find a dementor.
