    Default ftp access issue

I have a problem with an ftp site.

If I use my desktop with filezilla in either win7 or ubuntu 12.04 it does not connect to the site.

If I use my laptop which is only ubuntu with filezilla, it does. Both are hardwired to the same router so it is unlikely to be a problem with the router.

I would suspect Avast but I have the same problem with ubuntu on my desktop (dual booted) which does not have avast.

The username and password are good, the site has no sftp, it's just ftp. I could easily re-install filezilla but I don't see how that can really solve it.

So it won't connect to the site with a dual-boot Win7 machine but Ubuntu is OK on a single install system? Can you even see a file list? Are you sure your router or firewall is allowing outbound traffic for filezilla in Win7?

You might try looking at the settings and try editing the port settings. It could be hardware but I'd rule out something in Win7 first like blocked settings.

Exactly. Dual boot does not connect in either OS.
Single boot does, however, that uses a VPN connection, not sure if that bypasses any firewall on the router.

I also just tried WinSCP (brand new install) and that has the same problem.
OK, must be firewall, I turned avast off and tried again. Still no connection.

I'll go check the router logs now.

[edit] Solved. My router is blocking it.

Forgive me - I could be wrong - but if my creaky memory serves VPN should be using it's own security and bypassing normal router security. That may be why it was working on your laptop. In any case fixed. Good luck!

+rep - I have a VirginMedia SuperHub and just found quite a lot of pages that indicate the firewall setting on it is restrictive on anything other than low. The help is less than useless as it doesn't say what the actual differences between low/medium/high are and the logs don't show the block either! Ho hum, solved.
