what is the best unit in eb

The Post-Imperial Roman Legions, because they're extremely effective, cheap, and available in half the map.
Gaesatae, for being relatively easy-to-get Combat Monsters.
Dosidaskateli, for being ridiculously overpowered Combat Monsters.
Thorakitai Agematos Basileus, for being nearly as awesome as the aforementioned Dosidaskateli.
Carnute Cingetos, for being extremely effective warriors and leaders.
Worgozez, for being extremely effective Shock Units.
Aeldary Aembaltae, because they're absolutelying death on a horse.
Ragon Sauromatae Uaezdaettae, because while they're not quite as death-on-a-horse as the Aeldary Aembaltae, they're available nearly anywhere.
Spatahaura Hadabara, about as good as the Aeldary Aembaltae.
Dorkei Hatqapa, for being absolutely beautiful.
Sphendonetai, for being dirty, dirty cheap, and yet extremely effective against units that are abhorrently expensive.
Calawre, for being useful, effective, and being available in quite a large area.
Tekastos, for being huge and ridiculously powerful for a relatively cheap price.
Chaonian Agema, for being one of the best Pike units.
Toxotai Kretikoi, for being one of the best Archer units in the game, and widely considered *the* best Archer.
Druxtix Heruska, for being the same price as Xerunoudozez, but not appreciably better.
Gaisolitho Aljod, because.
Cordinau Orca, because they're so rare.
I beat back their first attack with ease. Properly employed, E's can be very deadly, deadlier even than P's and Z's, though they're not as lethal as Paula Abdul or Right Said Fred.

Dunaminica like polybian principes
Iberi Scutari better than camillan principes
Druxtiz Basterniskā best bang for your buck flankers and they carry a two handed scythe as a weapon. The original reapers!
Ambakaro hardier than Pedites Extraordinarii and they have cool facemasks
Loricati Scutari same as Ambakaro
Hypaspistai dual role assault infantry or hoplites.
Peltastai Makedonikoi the best "peltast" who are good in melee
The Carthaginian units are awesome when supported by the right units
Dorkei Hatqapa Iberim deadlier than Pedites Extraordinarii
Dorkim Alupim axes!
Dorkim Leebi-Feenikim Aloophim like Spartans but with axes!
HaDorkim HaQdosim also like the Spartans but better!
Swords don't kill people, people with swords kill people.
P Extraordinarii are Bigger and better-Defended than Ambakaro, though; that's really the biggest issue I have with the Ambakaro - they're a great unit, they just seem to die so quickly once they get into melee with an real dedicated melee unit. (I should note that I've never actually *used* Ambakaro, only fought against them, so keep that in mind) Also relevant: more expensive than P Extraordinarii as well. Really, the Ambakaro are more like the Thracian Peltast, except not quite as killy in melee thanks to the substantially lower Lethality, so comparing them to Pedites is going at it the wrong way.
Loricati are actually almost objectively worse than Pedites - significantly worse Armour, worse Shield, worse Morale, same melee. Really, the only saving graces for the Loricati are the slightly greater Hardiness, the lesser cost (both minimal), and the real kicker: the AP missile weapon they're rocking. Since it's the same strength (6, rather than the 4 of the Pila) *and* it's got superior range, it's quite the awesome weapon.

I'm not really a fan of elite units. The extra price you put in it is very often not worth for the extra armor or morale. That's why I like the versatile units with a bit lower cost. Persian archer-spearman units is a wonder; I tend to leave them exposed on purpose (unlike other archers which I protect) so the enemy cavalry will attack them. Their spears work like a charm and if they rout, they are a cheap unit to replace.
Light Gallic cavalry is also nice. Cheap, you can use it as a skirmisher but also as a charger. They pack a good punch for their price.
You the player is the best unit, all ingame units are as good as how you use them.
Personally i like Roman Legionaries for their multipurpose... they are perfect allarounders...
