Default AI not into joining battle.

All though most people around here say you shouldn't put the difficulty on hard or very hard for battles i did it and am pretty far in the game with Carthage with battles at Kyrene and the town underneath. It's simply impossible for my forces to win the battles at the. But because of that i've a second full army at my city to defend it but now comes the problem: i go out with my force to delay them enough so they can't reach the walls with there towers and latters but the AI ally just doesn't come it only comes after like half an hour. But by then the walls are already taken and they go through the gate who's just been taken so get utterly slaughtered. Is there anyway to have the AI attack because now it just stands waiting for me to get butchered for 20-30min before joining in. This has happened over and over and i'm using version 1.2.

Probably the issue is that there are too many men on the field. If there's above a certain number of individual soldiers (IIRC), the game simply won't let additional units onto the field for performance reasons.
I beat back their first attack with ease. Properly employed, E's can be very deadly, deadlier even than P's and Z's, though they're not as lethal as Paula Abdul or Right Said Fred.

They enter the battlefield and are attacking later on. I've had battles with bigger forces so i don't think that's the reason. They just stand there and wait.
