Kickstarting 3ds Max purchase for top modders?

CA employees work alot with 3ds Max. I'm not sure Shogun 2 can be modded to its full potential without it, please correct me if I'm wrong.

Sadly this is a very expensive piece of software, which most modders can't afford.

Would it be crazy to kickstart the purchase of such a license for (a) top modder(s)?

I'm not sure if they already - legally - own this program, but Radious, Darth_Vader and Akaie come to my mind.

Any comments?

No need to get a 3D licence to someone who is not a moddeler.

Manipulating the db to edit table is not the same as modeling a new equipment or uniform or whatever.

In any case, there's a 30 day trial available for 3DS Max that people can toy around with.

Exactly. And I'm not exactly sure (I'm not a modeler) but Blender and Maya could work out to? Can they export models to 3D Max format? I really don't know a great deal of 3d modeling. In either case in the company I have a Spanish copy of a 3DMax suit that the plant engineers bought for no reason along with the new Autocad. I might get a hold on it to my pc and start modeling at noon.

What do they classify as 'student'? One that stares at YouTube videos on modelling and creates modifications or one that actually attends a registered educational institution?

Dunno, but I'm just in the dutch equivalent of the american high school and I have a license.

They consider student anyone using the software to non commercial/formal ends.

For example you can use it to dick around in your house. To learn how to model. To make models for no commercial ends (making models for showing off, for mods, for competitions where there are really no prizes, etc...) and so on.

The rest, like professional ends (for company or working use), be it in home or in office, to teach others (as in college or any kind of school) or to sell the models you made, it's considered a commercial and thus paid license.

So to resume, you can use the student version, at home and only for non-profit ends. All the rest of the activities will require you to pay a license.
