Default Fall of the samurai worth it?

Hey, if you keep up with steam then you may know that the total war games are on sale (including the expansions). So as I already have all the Total War games except the Empire and Shogun 2 expansions is FotS worth getting for me because I like the traditional TW combat of melee and archers etc but I am not a big fan of the muskets - I like them in Napoleon but do not like them in Empire. I am already downloading RotS. If any of you are like me and don't exactly like the muskets in Empire but have Fots could you tell if it's worth it? cheers

I manage to complete one campaign with FOTS. Don't really like musket era honestly but still clocked 600hrs for ETA and 200hrs for NTW. More than 300hrs for S2 though it's Sengoku campaign and not FOTS.

In any case the game itself is great. CA games always get better than their previous games.

I suggest to wait a big discount (more than the actual 25%) on steam, pheraps happening in these days.

hey, the musket thing in FotS was actually fun, i liked the modern units there and i disliked empire TW.

Also you do get traditional units to use and going traditional army is fully viable (quite fun to beat modern armies with em ). With mods you get even more units

The campaign map is the best of the 3 so far, but due to how buildings are set up its gameplay is rather bogged down early on until you got your eco going. traditional units also takes a long time recruiting compared to modern units. (2 turns vs 1 turn. exeption being artillery which takes 3 turns)

That said, i'd wait for a steam sale before buying and trying it. Stick with the sengoku jidai and gempei campaigns for now

I'd say wait and get it cheap. I've played two FOTS campaigns, which I enjoyed, but have never gone back to it, for me there's not a lot of variety and the campaign map is a bit boring, I feel the same way about the Shogun2. I have put almost 1000 hours into Empire, which I've had about as long as FOTS, but it needs a mod - like DarthMod or Imperial Splendour - to make it playable, it is still very buggy though.

I would get it. First try it the normal way (using mostly modern units and what not) then try your hand at a traditional campaign (using mostly only swords spears and arrows for the most part) is always fun for a challenge!

is it near impossible to use traditional units? does it make much difference or is like playing as spain in rome total war where you just suck compared to all the other factions?

No with the right buildings and tactics traditional units can easily overpower a modern army.

Like DisgruntledGoat said it is actually decently easy if you use proper line of sight tactics and a decent amount of cavalry helps too.

I honestly prefer Napoleon when it comes to guns but its still a top notch game. Who doesnt want more Total War?

Fall of the Samurai is surprisingly very very very good addition to the game. It's very much enjoyable and fun to play. Highly recommended!

Agreed, FotS is well worth a purchase!

I dont like gunpowder, yet my gametime on FotS is upto around 300 hours (S2TW is about 600 hours). I have done a campaign with every faction and i just dont seem to be getting bored!

I think i enjoy it so much because, in a way, YOU control how much "modern" units you see, as opposed to ETW/NTW where its rifles and cannons for all. In FotS, you really can play how you wanna play, plus the better Campaign Map and naval bombardments, oh and the 1st person arty mode - all good things!

Yes, FOTS is a worthy add-on.

I was not expecting another improvement but, yes, they did it again, Fots is significantly better than Shogun II.

Yes, buy it. Especially if it's on sale.

ETW was actually my favorite in the series (with NTW running a close second) so, needless to say, FoTS was pretty much an auto-purchase for me. Say what you will, I can't get enough of lined, single-shot rifle combat with primitive (ie, non-automatic) artillery

If you don't like muskets, rifles, railroads and cannons, I'd say either wait for a major discount or don't buy it at all. I have a friend who couldn't even stand the original gunpowder tech in S2 vanilla
