Office of Professor James Elvric - Charms professor and Ravenclaw head of house

When he isn't teaching, or sleeping, or doing other things, in fact this is where you will rarely find James Elvric. He tends to get out and about alot. He has left a handy little bell in the office however, that if you ring will let him know that you are there. Then its just a matter of waiting. He might turn up in a flash of floo powder, a swish of a broomstick, maybe by walking through the door. And sometimes, he won't show at all.

A weak knock was heard on the door.

Unusually enough, James was in the office. He'd finally found the place ten minutes before hand. Having never set foot in Hogwarts was proving a liability compared to the students who all seemed to know every inch of the place. Some how he'd managed to find himself if the dungeons - dispite having started on the third floor, and no having gone down any stairs - He really couldn't figure the place out. Hearing the knock he opens the door and sees a rather small girl outside.

Hello there, come in come in. Make yourself at home.

Well, James reflected, if she could find anywhere to sit. The room was in complete disarray, so much so that not even the desk was sitting flat - somehow it had been propped up against the wall, yet none of the legs seemed to point in the direction they should.

How can i help you today?

The small girl was having her hoodie up almost as to hide withing its safety. she stood there, lone and not moving, her insecurity was somehow magnified by the sharp frames of the open door. She seemed to be clutching something withing the folds of the much too large robe. Her eyes ripped themselves from the floor on which they had been fixed. moved slowly and systematically up , he seemed young.. And kind. Her eyes stopped before they had to meet his eyes. When he invited her inside she stepped in as requested clutching the thing harder so that a soft crackle was heart, most likely a bag or an page of parchment. She considered what to do.. before she managed to do anything much to awkward she was saved by the young man asking how he could be of assistance. She tried to look him in the eyes again but her deep grey eyes failed in their quest and returned to the floor. Evie took a few seconds to make sure her voice wouldn't break when she used it. Some seconds to make sure she had it under control. Slowly she pushed out a parchment she held tightly with both of her small pale hands. Evangelina wanted to answer and speak and make friends with him. Smile and make conversation. But that was just.. not possible... She tried to smile, though she didn't know if he could see it for the hoodie or how successful it was anyway.

Seeing the quiet girl James smiles. She was clearly shy. With a wave of his wand, most of the stuff gets pushed out of the way, and two chairs appear in the centre of the room. Another flourish and a bottle of pumpkinjuice appears in midair, along with two glasses.

Please sit, pumpkin juice?

Assuming that she will say yes he pours two drinks and makes himself busy while she settles down and speaks.

Evangelina took the seat that was offered to her. She nodded.. Now she took the chance to look around the office out from the borders of the hoodie. It seemed.. old.. But... With a new atmosphere. Sitting on the chair she noticed her toe on the left foot was exposed discreetly she hid it under the robes hoping he had not noticed that she had come without shoes or at least socks. She felt claustrophobic in it. Filch had scolded her two times last year, else it had gone largely unnoticed.. Well there was also the time with the thorns on the ground in herbology.. Though her classmate was kind enough to be silent about it. She looked up a split-second to potentially meet his eyes and take the juice, she really liked pumpkin juice. Her small voice finally found courage to come forth.
"Thanks.."
She always managed to make a situation awkward, she hated that.
"I'm a Silver you see.."
Now she was mentally beating herself up. Oh yeah that would explain everything she thought at herself. He had not even seen the letter yet. She tried to come forth with a explanation or some kind of excuse but the words stuck in her mouth and she just sat with increasingly burning cheeks.

James wasn't sure what she meant by that.

Evangelina pushed the letter forward for him to take. It was for the headmaster, and as he was acting headmaster she came with it to him. It was a letter written with an shaky handwriting, from Glides Isobel Silver. Apparently he was the cousin of Evanglina, the name of the girl, and he was her warden. He had been fighting against the dark lords forces, and it had been their family that had been guarding the secrets about the spells protecting the ministry. The Death Eaters could not have gotten in there undetected, without paying the Silver family a visit.. They had been Aurors as long the ministry had existed. And the family was well-known in the wizarding world. Glides Isobel Silver explained how he had lost the right arm and leg, and fought in the latest intrusion upon the ministry a year ago. He had come directly from St. Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries, and he had been returned there in a worse condition than he left in. All in all a bad decision, but one that he was honourbound as a Silver and Last Auror in the family to make. The thing was though, he is in no condition to take care of a child, not just physically but mentally. He lost his entire family too, just like Evie, and they had not really spoken much together at the family gatherings before the war.. The shaky hanbdwriting, trailed off. IT was clearly hazy out of the mind writing. Yet clear headed enough to be serious. After writing about the summer where Evie had been forced to spend most of her time either in his lone apartment or in the hospital with him, which bred much awkward silence- he went to ask that she was allowed to live on Hogwarts permanently.

James read the letter, a slight frown on his head. After he had finished he looked at it for a moment then looked away into space.

If i read this right, you are asking to stay here though the summer holiday as well as the usual holidays?

[Narf]

Evangelina looked nodded slowly.. She felt abandoned, yet, she also knew she would have more to do on Hogwarts. She thought about what to answer. She made sure to have a straight unreadable face.. She bowed her head slightly and look at his reaction through the white hair-curtain that fell down.

I'm not sure i can't grant this request. It is the headmaster that needs to answer it. Is it what you want though?

[Narf]

Evangelina looked out of the window. She didn't want to burden glides. He was so damaged.. And. Something that looked like a hiccup shook the little body. He didn't want her either. To her it didn't seem like there was space for what she wanted. She had not made an opinion about it yet. Maybe this teacher just wanted this out and gone too.. She looked at him with her grey brilliant eyes, he was young too, younger than Glides, Evie nodded. She was afraid speaking would betray her feelings, but she was confident in her most convincing and practiced nod of deceiving agreement..

James sat and watched, as she shook slightly then gave a small nod. If he hadn't been watching closely he'd easily have missed it.

I'm not quite sure if that nod was a yes you do want to stay here, or a yes you want to do something else.

James frowned, he felt slightly sorry for the girl, he knew what being alone as a child was like.

You need to tell me what you want, not just stay quiet, else i cannot help you.

Standing James wonders over to the window, where the pumpkin juice had decided to float to. Grabbing the bottle he refills his glass and nudges the glass to float over to Evie should she wish another glass.

I'm going to tell you a story before you answer my question. Bare with me, you will see the point of it quickly enough.

Do you know why wizards use wands? I'll tell you why. We can all cast magic, especially when our emotions are particularly strong. But being consistent at casting magic, well that's something else entirely. It is for this reason we use wands. The gestures, the words we speak, the spells we cast are simply focused by the wands. It allows us to cast the magic with ease. For example, Wingardium Leviosa. It is what i am using on the pumpkin juice glasses. A simple enough spell to cast, yet takes considerable talent to cast without a wand.

James clearly places his wand on the side, then turns to a book tucked in the corner, with a wave of his hands it begins to float in the air.

That is far harder than it looks.

Now, what does this have to do with anything? Well, you might ask yourself, what does a witch, or a wizard do if they don't get a wand at eleven? You might think that they don't learn magic. But the talent is still there is it not? And magic has a way of coming out, especially if you don't know how to control it. My first instance of magic, the moment that proved me to be a wizard, well, it was my tenth birthday - quite late for most people - and another boy wouldn't give me my toys back. In anger his hair turned orange. To this day it has never been corrected. Now i am a muggle. I believe that's the term. I have no knowledge of magical parents or ancestors of any kind. Mathematically its probable that if i go far enough back i have a wizard in the family, but i'm not aware of it. Because of this, and because of my late showing of magical talent - as an august child it was mere days before i would have started at Hogwarts had i attended the school - i was missed out of the usual process. Normally an owl arrives, inviting you to Hogwarts and so forth. It never occurred for me. Three months later my father died, and since my mother had died in childbirth, it rather left me alone. I had no other family than my dad, and being upset the magic began bubbling out. By the time a year had passed, i had been kicked out of my sixth school - because of this happening though magic, not because i was a naughty child - no other school wanted me and my foster parents had kicked me out. I was given a place in some hostel for troubled kids, but i never bothered going. I knew what that place would be like, and made my way out of the town i was in.

It was about a week later, when i hadn't eaten for four days that i truly discovered my magic. Some poor rabbit got trapped by it, and i learned that if i waved my hands just so... James points at the book now floating ...i could make things float in the air. Well, i'm sure you can imagine how much fun i had with that. And slowly i began learning different spells and things i could do. I was probably casting the equivalent of third year magic by the time i was fifteen and i bumped into a rather strange sight. Two wizards duelling each other. I watched hidden, and noticed their wands. After one - an auror i now believe - captured the other i crept away and began experimenting. I ended up making a rather poor quality wand but it was enough, my ability in magic, most particularly charms grew in leaps and bounds. I was eighteen when i first encountered the wizarding world. Or at least more so than my brief encounter. Somehow, and to this day i have no idea how, i found myself walking the streets of London, when i saw a pub that looked inviting. I entered, not entirely honestly, i'd learned a trick of being able to duplicate bank notes, a handy trick, and the money was real enough, but still not earned in any fashion. Inside was the strangest man. An absolutely huge guy.

Turned out to be Hagrid, and though talking to him i discovered the entire wizarding world.

So you see, i know something of not quite having a place to fit in. There is still much about magic - potions is an excellent example - that i know nothing of. Indeed, the day we arrived on the train was the first day i had ever set foot in this school.

James came to an end. He'd talked a little more than he had intended. But he suspected, having read the letter that his story would help the girl.

Evie finished her pumpkin juice about the same time he finished speaking, she was deeply mesmerized, looking at him without.. Fear? for the first time. Her brilliant grey eyes deep as wells removed themselves with a speed that equaled the power with which she had been looking at him, a handbook was summoned from the folds, fast. A page was written with a curly beautiful handwriting in less than 15 seconds, with that down she could forget the valuable notes on wandless magic for now and commit her mind to the story itself. The notebook disappeared as fast as it had been summoned into the folds of her robe. She returned to look at him. With the freed thought process she tried to apply his story to her own. Forgetting that she was staring, something she would not do under normal circumstances. She returned slowly, and in doing so a red hue took and invaded her cheeks. Blinking a few time she apologized almost soundlessly. She had amazing memory, thought back through what he had told, after doing so a few times she looked up at him again.. She was not used to make decisions about anything at all. She still fully expected him to make a judgement even though he had asked her about her own opinion on the matter. Well, he had told her to not stay quiet. She looked outside the window again.. Then back at him.. narrowing her eyes. Then she looked at her hands.. Her brows narrowed in thought.. Slowly she parted her lips and spoke with her small voice. The warmest smile telling of a child that had laughed and smiled a lot flourished, the eyes too glimpsed with equal warmth that second. *Suddenly she looked him in the eyes.
"Welcome to Hogwarts.."

James waited patiently while Evie came to grips with his story. He could see from the way she was sitting that it had struck a cord with her. Good. If he could help her he would. When she finally spoke, and in her voice welcomed him to Hogwarts, he had to grin.

Evie looked down in the ground again, she smiled a little, her cheeks still with a slightly red hue from earlier..

James invites the boy in, the office is a bit tidier than when Evie visited earlier. The table and chairs in their proper place. The desk had been pushed against the window, so that James could see outside as he worked. It left the room quite spacious, and with nothing between the professors and the students chairs. Pouring the boy a glass of pumpkin juice James considers to himself that he is going to have to set up a continuous order with the house elves at this rate.
