cannot play campaign, only custom battles

Kind of driving me nuts.

Windows 7, most recent versions of rometw, using steam, rs2.5 launcher, Rome 0 turn campaign.

So, the launcher doesn't really work, but i've gotten around that throught fixes for steam version found on this forum, but as the title says I can only select battles at the main menu. If I try to launch by the launcher it doesn't do anything and if I try to launch directly from rome.exe it says it failed to find steam. I can only launch through steam then, but again, it only let's me play custom battles.

I think the game thinks I haven't chosen a campaign b/c I haven't launched through the launcher, even though I have selected a campaign using the launcher.

Any ideas?
