Many nations have special units which will destroy weaker units quite quickly. here are some of the units and how to form an army to defeat them.
Phalanx especially the spartans toughness is superiority on a head on attack which can cripple many weaker units which roman factions can offer.
Phalanx weakness is they are slow and unmaneuverable which is very deadly if the enemy force is made of phalanx and missile cavalry because several units of cavalry can shread the missile troops wile the phalanx can't catch the cavalry.
The best force to defeat a mostly phalanx force is 3/4 your toughest soldiers and 1/4 cavalry while your foot soldiers attack head on then when the enemy is engaged hit them from behind and that will cripple them instantly.
Once you begin to ruin their army your foot soldiers can begin to flank the units through the gaps where enemy units now routed were.
Another special unit is the Chariot units which are specifically agrivating for me because they are so fast and they can slaughter cavalry and light infantry alike.
Their weakness is if you can stop them your forces can take them down so since they are fast use plenty of horse archers who can deal plenty of damage and have your forces on loose formation but if they stop storm them and they will fall easily.
Its also been said a good phalanx line can utterly destroy chariots with minimal casualties.
Another really good unit is elephants which can tear through units very easily but their weakness is they are big targets and lots of velites with take them down but they will probably have foot infantry with them as well so imediately dispatch all the velites toward the flank where the elephants are because when they are done with the velites can concentrate on the foot infantry.
Said to be the best infantry in the game the german berserkers man to man are nearly invincable but several men I've heard engage them frontally then use archers behind them to tear them apart.
I intend to test them against elephants and chariots in custom battles but phalanx they shread them head on.
Now hope this help and all you more experienced guys don't hesitate to point out errors in my info and please post something you'd like to share so hopefully some new guy comes through and finds out as many tips as possible to help him along
