Default Windows Vista - Which Version Will You Get?

My current PC is a nice machine that my parents bought a couple of years back that over time i have upgraded to be up to speed with todays gaming requirements (P4 2.6Ghz, 1GB RAM, 128mb Geforce 6800). Now I plan to wait for Direct X 10 and Windows Vista till I buy a new PC myself. But just to make things more difficult, MS have decided to make 6 editions of Vista for you to purchase and not only that but a new OS is coming out half a year after Vista which will make my new shiny machine that i just spents hundreds on soon obsolete. Pushing the last thought out of my mind im now struggling to decide which version of Vista I should buy. I want to spend the least amount possible but I want every feature I can get.

I'm ditching microsoft in favor of linux so I have the pleasure of not even considering Vista.

I'll probably buy the Windows Vista Ultimate version because my PC is mostly used for gaming, school, and work.

I defenately need the ultimate edition, and I think a lot of ppl do. So I hope they won't make it too expensive.

I'll go with home premium, possibly ultimate. My build for January-Febuary will pretty much only be for games.

I'm using the Beta 2 of Vista Ultimate edition and it sucks! Far too many crashes, driver problems, and the media center is broken.

That is why it's called BETA.

But I guess you are right, there will be problems with every version of the Vista for some time even after release, unless of course they actually do finish this OS before releasing what I doubt as Microsoft is not known from releasing bug free and complete versions.

I will propably just stick with Windows XP until they make Vista bugless. I might try Ultimate for a while, but if it have bad bugs and crashes when it's released I believe it's Windows XP for me until most of the problems have been resolved.

I bought Xp at a very late date and it still has SP1 in it, and after a few months they relased another XP with SP2 , should have waited longer, but anyway I taking Ragabash's advice to wait longer for the Vista :hmmm:

XP works well enough for me, I'm content to wait for several years. I have Office XP, too - so my immediate IT needs are catered for a considerable length of time...

Yeah, I just bought a new PC with XP, and I don't care if Vista comes with flying pigs and drunken pink elephants, I'm not switching.

I think you'll change your mind within months after Vista's release after seeing eye candy in games with DX10

Until games start requiring Vista I'm not touching it with a 10 foot pole. They've already removed all the interesting features that had in mind for useless eyecandy.

Likewise Mongol. However, I have to ask. Can you just do a reformat and install an OS of Vista instead of XP, right? You wouldn't need to buy a brand new system to Run Vista if you bought something of high status right now?

probably mixed. One with this, one with that. Just to confuse everyone even more.

I remember back in the day when Windows 95 came out. What a trash. Also with windows millenium - the forgotten OS, which was a complete disaster. The longest OS i ever had was windows98SE. I liked it. WindowsXP felt like (and still does) a resource hog. Also the early days of WinXP, was anything but spectacular. I mean after the novelty wore off from the special-eye candy, there were also security problems, not to mention compatibility issues.
I was reading something interesting also. Since most people running winxp nowadays, windows98 and win2000 is actually far more safer to use than winXP.

I'm not sure about Vista, but i might be switching over the the Mac. It let's you run winXP in a window if you feel like running a windows software.

why microsoft always have to steal ideas?
from windows95 and on, they have been taking stuff from the mac OS X and claiming it revolutonary.

Well, the current Beta 2 of Vista is crap. It's a resource hog and it crashes all the time. It has constant driver problems, especially in regards to video. The screen goes blank a lot of times after resuming from standby or from a full screen video. The media center always crashes and doesn't work.

I did notice also that Vista, looks very much like Mac OS in regards to the graphic UI. And others seem to agree. :hmmm:

Im a big newb when it comes to this stuff, so, a couple of questions, please...

Question the first - Will I be able to switch to Vista from XP, without needing to buy a new machine? Is it easy to do? As long as its possible, I guess I can take it somewhere and get it done.
Question the second - How long do you guys think it will be before it replaces XP as the norm?
