FTOS Can you switch sides?

Its a pretty n00b question, but Im just wondering since Im ordering it now, I heard that factions can switch sides from Imperial or Shogunate, but I was just wondering if you the player can switch sides?

you can switch sides as a players yes, think its done in the clan family interface.
You can't switch sides after "realm divide" though.

I don't know the requirements for it (if there's any) though.

Is there "realm divide" on FOTS? I heard there isn't (I never played FOTS of course).

In a way. Once the yellow bar is filled, you get overed the choice: keep figting for the emperor/shogun, or try to start a republic. In the first option, it end sup being shogunate alliance vs imperial allaince, with you being the vanguard. Hw hard it gets, depends on how much clans have the same allegiance at the time/ have switched during the game (on very hard difficulty, a lot of clans switch, leading to you being quite isolated at the end)

When going for republic, all clans declare war on you (but the imperial vs shogunate struggle goes on). a major problem is that you now have to convert all your provinces to republic sentiment.
