Whats with the New name?

Total War: Rome 2, why not the traditional _______:Total War #.

Did they do this to stop confusion or just to make the name more Organized as a series like Call of Duty: _______, and Battlefield: ____________.

I'm just still used to the old ______: TW # way of saying it, I'm asking was their any good reason for it?

It was done back in 2010 i think, when they decided (SEGA/CA/Both??) to "rebrand" the series into Total War:__________ and released Total War:Shogun II and now its here to stay.

Im with op though, i still verbally call them Shogun Total War and so on, and when typing i still put S2TW or R2TW and so on, not TWRII!

Yeah I find the newer naming policy awkward but they wanted Total War to be the main identifier since that is the name of the series. I still refer to them as RTW, NTW, ect.

It's easier to tell that it's in a series of games if "Total War" comes first. Pretty much every major game series does this(NHL, FIFA, Call of Duty etc)

but yeah i just cant get it to stick in my head, maybe this name change will go down in TWC history, our newer TW fellows might not even know it was once called RTW or NTW, and M2KTW(Actually i dont use this one at all)

Also when i was searching for this game/shogun 2 in gamestop/gametrailers and such it took me 10 minutes, just to find the game which i didnt even find i only clicked on RTW's Suggestions

But Total War: ________ makes more sense, the brand always puts first. Only in total war games the brand is placed after (______: Total war), not enhancing the brand at all. Total War is the name of the series, but it seems it's just two generical words that is part of the title.

______: Total War has the merit of emphasizing the total war, the characteristic of the title, but not the brand itself.

By the way, many things have changed lately in the brand

and now games, Total War and Total War battles, have after the title "total war" a little picture of a horseman, which represents the period. In Total War Battles: SHOGUN a japanese horseman, in Total War: ROME II a roman horsemen with spear



With Shogun 2 we have the change frotm Shogun 2: Total War to Total War: SHOGUN 2

Honestly i still wont ever get used to this, as i never say 'Call of duty World At War' i'd rather just say World at War.(This however doesnt work with Battlefield series.

(Sorry i picked WAW, because COD4 was literally called Call of duty 4 or as it seems)

Yeah; this revisionist re-branding is nothing more than a back-door route straight into (y) our pocketbook(s), the end result being a fast ride down the slippery-slope of a titular past that never was.

...I uncategorically toss my gauntlet into the Rome II: Total War camp! Let the eggheads in the CA/Sega ivory tower send their jack-booted thugs to my door in the dead of night-they'll soon find that they're dealing with a street-smart fish out of water that plays by his own rules-so what have they then?-nothing but their millions of greenbacks...

...cold comfort on those lonely nights when their fan-base is snuggling up to the modders!

Personally, I just use the game title that was official upon release. So the first Shogun is Shogun: Total War, the first Rome is Rome: Total War, the second Shogun is Total War: Shogun II, the second Rome will be Total War: Rome II.

I think overall the new branding is probably more sensible, though. (The Empire Strikes Back: Star Wars? Dawn of the Dinosaurs: Ice Age? The Tides of Darkness: Warcraft II?) I don't care too much either way, but given the choice, I'd put the Total War first and the setting second.

The same for every TW games. Already doing it for Shogun 2 TW.

Doesn't matter to me. Even CA wants to name it Total Rome War II I'll still buy it. The marketing gimmick is more to attract new legions of potential customers. Existing customers already know what Total War is about.

New people might have heard of Total War spoken of so if put the period name in the front as before then some might not connect. I know strange it may sounds but they didnkt just woke up one and decide to just change the naming convention. Lots of research has been taken into consideration.

I still say it the "old way" and I think, I read somewhere that this was done to keep the Total War games together in lists, like in Steam.
