Default Old World Blues - Fallout New Vegas DLC

    Old World Blues

Old World Blues I was strolling along when I found a satellite that had fallen to Earth, it just so happened to be midnight. While examining this satellite I was teleported to a very, very odd place. That was Big Mountain. A huge scientific research facility with some very humorous and grotesque beings roaming around. I wen't in having no idea what was going on and this is something that makes the whole experience of Old World Blues better. I won't go into too much details as I go on in this review, but you have been warned.

After I awake from the odd and abrupt teleportation I find myself in what seems to be a hospital gown fearing what happened. I find out through some very humorous conversation by some very eccentric old world doctors, or the think tank, that they have made me their lab rat! I was dissected and to top it all off they stole my brain, well lost it, my spine, and heart! This is where the adventure really begins. I am sent to look all across the map for parts needed to get my brain back and help out the Think Tank, well that is what they think. By this time I was in such a good mood by the very humorous writing, and just the general feel of the world around me I was actually looking forward to exploring this crater in the Earth.

    Think Tank

You will find some very odd creatures while you explore and some brain dead humans strolling around, who were lets just put it, not as lucky as you. Everything you find will feel like it came out of a disastrous science project, and well it actually really did. You had better be suitably prepared however. When I first wen't out I was dismayed at how poor my weapons, which seemed great in the Mojave, faired against the creatures of this place. Don't be worried suitable weapons are found, quite easily I might add, everywhere. You will even find unique "prototype" weapons and if you chose the right dialogue with the Think Tank you can take advantage of some early gear and weaponry! While exploring, especially if you take your time, you can find some great general lore about creatures, weaponry, and more. Most of the stuff you actually find here will be unique to here. Things that you can't already find in the Mojave.

    Lobotomite

While on the main quest you will find many, many opportunities to start some very in depth or just plain hilarious side quests. One example could be getting the "dog" bowl for one of the Think Tank members. If you have the Wild Wasteland perk it only adds to the hilarity of this DLC as a whole. Whether it be these side quests or just things you encounter. This DLC seems to have been made to have the perk! Not all the side quests will just be hilarious either, they will be immensely rewarding. One I like to mention, or well, I think, this is a must do quest is the one to attain the Stealth suit Mk II. Although, this may be a part of the main quest it does have side quests attached to it. One being upgrading the suit. This is not something you have to do, but it greatly increases the stats of the suit overall and it is generally fun doing so. There are just so many opportunities to stay entertained while working on your main quest.

When you have actually finished the main quest you will be tasked to search and destroy a rival and ex-member of the Think Tank. Who seems to have become insane, but you cannot say that the Think Tank themselves don't seem insane, and also finding your brain in the process which seemed to get itself stolen. Anything you really do from this point forward is really of your own accord. You can take revenge on the Think Tank or you can just go and do your own thing, which really is getting your brain back. Speaking of your brain who would have thought it had a mind of it's own?

    Conclusion and Score Conclusion:

Old World Blues was something I really got my hopes up for after the let down that was Honest Hearts. It did exactly that and more. The DLC is just generally hilarious, the atmosphere is very unique -very different than what you are used in the Mojave, everything you find seems unique, interesting, powerful, even all the creatures you encounter. Everything was just..great! You even get your own player housing with an array of robots who have a mind of their own to do your bidding, and hilariously I might add. I know I didn't go into much detail about that, experiencing it first hand will just make things, in my opinion, much better. I know it did for me going in blind, so to speak. This is something that really puts life into Fallout New Vegas, and gives you some powerful weapons and armor in the process.

    Final Score:

    9/10

    Pros:

    • Great Lore
    • Hilarious Writing
    • Interesting quests, creatures, items.
    • Nearly everything seems unique to the DLC

    Cons:
    • Ending seemed to be quite of a let down.
    • Most weapons don't work well
    • Some of the quests got very repetative

"GO MY MINIONS!! DESTROY THEM IN THE NAME OF ALL THAT IS MOBIUS!"

My second favourite NV dlc behind Dead Money (Amazing Atmosphere) Really captures the retro-future feel of the original Fallouts while adding some great dialogue in, and of course with a poignant over-arcing story!
