Reading previous political threads, I thought this would be the best place to ask.
I suppose this question can apply to any person from a western nation. (BTW, I'm a total noob to these forums so pardon my ignorance)
Much of the Canadian media is currently focused on the "crisis" in the Mid-East, most importantly, our government's efforts to evacuate these 40,000+ so-called Canadian citizens from Lebanon. I'm pretty ignorant when it comes to politics, but here's my question: Are these Foreign nationals people who actually live in Canada and pay taxes, or just reap the benefits of having citizenship in this country? Here, our immigration policies are quite lax which is why our country has a large immigrant population. We also offer free health care and welfare to citizens who need it. That being said, do these foreign nationals from Lebanon live and work in Canada as well as pay taxes? The impression I've gotten from fellow Canadians (all white, anglo-saxon protestants, I might add) is that the majority of these Lebanese "citizens" in Canada do in fact not consider themselves Canadian, but rather visitors to exploit our free health care and welfare.
I'd hate to think that we as a people are bigots, but so much is difficult to ignore. In fact, Osama bin Laden (who is quite wealthy from what I hear) sent his wife to Canada, where she currently remains on welfare.
Further frustrating to our public is the fact that many Lebanese-Canadians are criticizing the Conservative government for their slow response, while it is clear that we do no possess a fleet in the Mediterranian let alone a sufficient/modern air force (a legacy of the the bleeding-heart Liberal government) to lift these "Canadians" from war-torn Lebanon.
Can anyone answer my questions and perhaps clear the facts up a bit. Because currently, there is a severe lack of support for the Lebanese cause in this country, aside from vocal Arabic foreign nationals in the Liberal-controlled media. I, and fellow Canadians in my city are currently seeking answers to this puzzling situation.
In conclusion, I hope there there are no unnessary casualties in this conflict, but in war, tragedies are difficult to prevent. I pray (to some God/higher power) that this war soon ends and the instigators are brought to justice. But as far as I and many others are concerned, we are ****ing confused about how to feel about this conflict or the criticisms from Lebanese-Canadians.
