Icon3 When will Sandy Bridge be overshadowed by Ivy Bridge?

So the question I have is this, when do you think Sandy Bridge's prime time is over with, when it's gone with the wind to be left to the hounds?

On average Ivy Bridge is 5% more powerful per clock than Sandy Bridge, they use the same microarchitecture (22nm).

Ivy Bridge is unquestionable the leading generation of processors for Intel until Haswell and there is no question it eventually will eventually overshadow Sandy Bridge.

When do you think it will happen? When most high-end gaming computers will be running IB over SB?

they use the same microarchitecture but sandy is at 32nm and ivy at 22nm..

it seems sandy is a lot more easy to cool thus better able to overclock higher.. for now there isnt really much difference for gaming.. except ivy is a little less powerhungry..

On average Ivy Bridge is 5% more powerful per clock than Sandy Bridge, they use the same microarchitecture (22nm), making Ivy Bridge more efficient.

not going to happen, probably we will see a shift towards haswell or for most that have SB systems for broadwell.

You have to understand that a 10-15% difference is meaningless for a lot of people. Aside that there will be a socket change when haswell arrives, why are you going to waste money on a dead platform?

    Tock.

Haswell will overtake SB. Intel works in a tick-tock development cycle. SB is tick, IB is tock.

Agree wit hthe above but Ivy has already over shadowed Sandybridge

sure Sandy is easier to cool that hasnt stopped many users from pushing 4.6ghz to 4.7ghz on a regular basis ie the avg cock, sandys avg clock is 4.5

So in terms of average overclock Ivy is higher, in terms of performance it depends on the application but in Shogun 2 Ivy has a solid 20% lead which is nothing to sneeze at.

In the end however Ivy is just a tweaked sandy with lower power consumption.

Haswell will be the true replacement.
