Default What Rome II means for RTW?

RTW is arguably one of the best TW games and is still played by hundreds today - so my question is, will it continue to do so? I know the fabulous mods have granted it an extra long life, but will that be enough? I mean a lot of people play RTW for the era, so with a new game being released will be people upsticks and move to the shiny new version, or will they stay to one of the most epic games ever?

What do you think, and what will you?

I for one will most likely stick with RTW as my computer would frizzle to death if I tried loading up Rome 2 (from what I've seen anyway ).

In my humble opinion, most people will probally move on to R2TW. Some may stay because of nostlagia, some may not like the changes in R2TW and some may have other reasons.

Depends. If all the fanboys dreams are realized, then R2TW will be the new most popular TW game. However, if R2TW has only the lukewarm approval by the fan base, ala E:TW, then the original will remain very popular.

I think that moding will play a huge role again. Rome I is alot moddable.

Also if the game requires everything high, people will play Rome I becasue they can't run Rome II with their Pc

There are also those that will stay and play Rome I because they will not like Rome II because of different reasons, like the engine and so on.( For example I still play Stronghold Crusader eventhough Stronghold 3 is out and that is only because they messed up the game even more)

Some people will stay and play Rome I becase they don't like steam games.

And there are many more reasons like this probably.

I miself will try Rome II, but if I don't like it I will go back to Rome I. It is a long shot untill Rome II is released and it is yet to be seen what will it be like.

    You all talk sense.

I agree with Asgaroth, I think modability will be a big factor. Although I don't think Steam will be a big thing, that is just a sign of the times. I see Mr Lusted is browsing this thread, does he have anything?

@Ne Obliviscaris, I think if R2TW is a great success nostalgia will only be present for the die-hard RTW fans.

It does depend, as has been said, on the popularity of R2TW. If it is a Huge success then people will play RTW for the nostalgia, but not for gaming.
If it sucks people will play RTW in slightly reduced numbers.
Either way a core of people whose PCs won't be able to handle Rome II will always play Rome: Total War, the Greatest RTS to date.

I know people will still play the game for the mods and, obviously, just because they like it. Rome Total War is very inactive online for the most part and, Rome II may take part of the already small playerbase, but I am not too worried about that either. I know Rome II will have loads of improvements (and an avatar campaign).

Depending on modding support for this next title, I will either move on to RII or I won't even buy it at all.

I know I'm not alone in this.

We have to convince ourself that RTW has the months counted. RTW II will replace it. I think that all the PCs now can handle a game as this. However if someone doesn't care on upgrading its old PC and can't play sincerely CA shouldn't care too much...
I hope RTWII will be able to repeat the same popularity achieved by the first one..

Sincerely with or without modding, I will buy this game for sure and all the DLCs CA will release...

the total war games have never been meant to be "historical simulators" though they are historically inspired with lots of historical stuff thrown in but CA adds something ahistorical in there to add some flavour to the games usually.

i will probably pick this up on release day and honestly rome is meh without the mods but i believe rome 2 will be great without mods

I'm not buying it then. I mean, I haven't even bought Shogun II, nor do I intend to buy it.

At least not until there's some summer -50% off steam sale or something would I consider spending money on them.
Maybe I'd go to /v/ and beg for a gift code...

inb4 OMG you only buy games for the mods omg, ure so nub.

Yea, I bought Minecraft only so I could play the Technic pack. And after all the fuss that DayZ is causing I'm considering buying ArmaII only for it.

Some people I know also got MIITW only for the TATW mod.

    yep

For me, modability is arguably the most important thing a game can have. I still play all of the '90s FPS games simply because of the infinite replay value they all have. Total War has only stood out thus far because each campaign unfolds in a different way, but even that becomes a chore after a while. With mods, though, every factor is in flux, which just unlocks thousands of possibilities that never would have existed in the first place.

I don't enjoy seeing a step backwards in this regard at all. Of course, SG2 would probably also run like a snail in molasses on my comp as it's starting to age, but even so, the value just feels reduced severely.

In short, I agree with you in part, though I do find value in the vanilla version of most games. Just not as much as the norm.

well imagine if rtw 1 had not been moddable ................imagine if rtw2 is not able to be modded..............if rtw2 is an arcade type game and is unmoddable .....i predict it will rise and then fall flat ....its the mods that give rtw1 its very extended life.......take them away and i believe the game would have died years ago........rtw2 will be a turning point for total war ...for good or bad ....time will tell

One just has to consider the amount of "roman-era" themed mods that are still coming out for RTW and MIITW (and IIRC, even for MTW!). That pretty much says a lot on how long those games will last. I really have almost no intention of ever leaving RTW, I must have a few 500 hours under my belt, but the sheer amount of user-created content just keeps me coming back again and again. As a matter of fact, I've never finished a game of S2TW (not even with mods!), just because I'd get bored and missed the feeling of the engine and the era of RTW, with all the new features that different mods can add to it (although the melee mechanics in the Warscape engine also keep me from playing there too long either).

As many people said before, R2TW will appeal RTW fans mostly on how moddable the new installment in the series will be. However, SEGA is really only interested in the sales, I don't think they care if we keep on playing it (unless they want us to buy the DLC's and keep the MP alive). However, if CA is capable and willing of creating and releasing more mod tools for us, that would mean that they really care for the hardcore SP/modding community, because they are really interested that we keep on playing the game that they made for us, even if we already spent all our money on the base game and DLC's.

some good comments which are favourable in my opinon, to be honest I really hope RTW isn't going to just be left to collect dust just because of a game that is going to try and replace it. After all it was the start for everything, for example it was if I am correct the first 3d RTS at the time and ever since that it changed the way RTS games were made. ect.
