does this guy have grrms official approval? if not, this is going to be shot down so hard....
Not if it's freely distributed
grrm is even shutting down fanfic if he gets a hold on it, and this is quite public. he is worried that if he allows anyone to partake in his creative property, this could create a legal precedence or something.
ALL fanfic? That doesn't make sense... unless you're talking about more than just fanfic posted online (because there's tons of those up already and impossible to stop).
Even with my middle-school Civics knowledge, I'm pretty sure this doesn't constitute something illegal as much as people dressing up and re-enacting scenes from the books on Youtube would. This person is asking for money donations to make this project; they aren't out to make a profit.
And as said in the video, as well as looking at their site, they've been at this for at least a full year or more now,
then i fear your middle-school civics are not enough here. failure to legally protect your intellectual property, even if only used in non-profit cases, can lead to you giving up rights to it.
here grrm on the issue

for the legal aspect, skip to the part about Marion Zimmer Bradley.
I've been reading to the post on the blog, so technically even the AARs in the AAR category are somewhat against what GRRM likes? That kind of stinks. I'm all up to protect your creation and universe but a little playing with "what could have happened" couldn't hurt anyone.
Those guys are doing an adaptation not fan fiction so they're on a different conflicting field, they need authorization (like the Game of Thrones hbo series had to buy off GRRM) which I don't know if they can get.
Look at it this way would you let some people make a film after your story for free or in exchange for some money. After the Got tv series I'm pretty sure someone will pay money for more ASOIAF screen time, and GRRM much like thousands of other people around the world likes money![]()

Some battles are won with swords and spears, others with quills and ravens. Tywin Lannister
10000 $? That is A LOT of money for a fan made video!
Well. That hasn't stopped a great many people

I see where he is coming from, but it feels to me a stretch to apply it here. It looks to me to be the same as cracking down on people like this:
well, its an adaptation of his stories, and one he probably wants to cover himself. so, i hope these guys just didnt make this in the blue eyed hope itll be alright, only to got all their work shut down.
I honestly think Fan Fiction is a much better way to go since who the hell even gives a crap about tarzan? many people believe in cthulu and its a much more famous icon in this digital world than tarzan ever was. I really think it should be surivival of the best, not the ones who get their first and say "Its mine and only mine". I hate the copyright act and plaigerism since they both kill creativity + advancement and leave great tales to never live on. Cinderella has been a story since the damn Dark ages.
Yeah like the post above me, i think its right to protect your own story but once an idea is put into ones mind... only death will stop it, also i like the what if's style of stories.

In the TATW forums, the fan-made films about Tolkien's works were greeted with applause and general optimism.
Here we get a legal discussion.
If it gets shot down, lets all hate on GRRM and Co when it happens, until then lets actually consider the project and how great or bad it would be.
agree with this. But that Lotr fan movie was really good.
Idk, but I wasn't convinced by that scene. The acting felt, unnatural imo.
Anyway my submod is probably the very embodiment of the "fanfic" GRRM hates, some lore intermixed with made up events and characters. Luckily it is too small for him to notice, I hope![]()
I`m kinda torn.
I don`t dislike fanfic stuff, but GRRM does. So if one values his works one should refrain from doing something that he dislikes.
On the other hand; Our mod certainly does include some fanfic or rather assumptions about some stuff. (Hey, grrm shouldn`t complain- It`s not our fault that only some of the worst game studios get the rights to his products and produce bad games..)
So i say: If one likes the books so much that he invests his free time into doing movies of it- Well, power to him!
i guess the lotr fan films are a bit different, as they afaik deal with something tolkien hasnt directly written a story about.
lets just hope this rolls, and refrain from mailing to grrm, hey did you know....?
its only mentioned, but never shown, even in the books.
