Default More accurate representation of Byzantine empire (late period)

I was just curious what other people thought about this. I mean, I think the developers did a pretty good job....but I simply don't understand why control is granted to rival claimants at the start.

The Western provinces in Western Greece simply shouldn't be controlled by the player. I mean, they were all after the same throne.

The only one that matters is the main tree. Alexios in Trebizond and the Doukas in the West should be rebels, unless you wanted to use up faction slots of the three different claimants and just clone the unit rosters.

Anyway, just wondered what other people thought about controlling what is essentially a group of enemies...

I didnt find it a problem in that, within the first 15 turns, or so, Id marry Alexios to the princess and "accidently" kill off the the current ruling family.

Then the Comnenos family is back in charge... time to rebuild the empire

Keep the Doukas family around long enough to retake the Greek islands, then they mysteriously die off as well.

Basically Alexios performs a very subtle coup d'etat on all of his rivals.

    Yeah, that's fine.

But it doesn't make any sense to be able to control all the parties.

Like, I would be happy enough starting out with only 2 regions - with the emperor and heir and making Trebizond and Western Greece rebel provinces with buffed full garrisons in the cities and a full stack outside.

Oh ok, I think this was a balance decision by the team... I mean the Byz were in a rough position at this time (if they are computer controlled they usually die off before long), so imagine if they started even weaker.

You can still empower them without giving them extra regions.

Infrastructure, money, numbers of troops and quality of troops.

If you're patient, my submod for BGR V addresses this issue; you'll only be able to play as the Empire of Nicaea. The Empire of Trebizond and the Despotate of Epirus will be represented by rebels, with appropriately named generals in charge.
