Default Any good modern native Japanese samurai artists?

Hi, I was wondering if any of you guys knew about some good modern-day native Japanese artists/mangaka whose specialty is pictures of samurai. Now, don't get me wrong, I like art by Angus McBride and Richard Hook, among other British artists, as much as the next guy, but to me, there's nothing that compares to the works native Japanese artists do.

Now, I know the works of Tsuyoshi Nagano, and I also like the character portraits in Nobunaga's Ambition, Rot3K, and Taiko Risshiden (don't know who drew those), but I'm looking for other artists--mangaka are welcome, too. I know Ryoichi Ikegami illustrated a manga biography of Oda Nobunaga, Tetsuo Hara has done quite a bit of samurai manga, Hiroshi Hirata's been famed for his realistic samurai manga, Mitsuteru Yokoyama did quite a few samurai manga, and who can forget Lone Wolf & Cub (but that's set in the Edo period)--but I want to find out how many other native Japanese artists nowadays are adept at drawing samurai. And why wouldn't they be? It's their history, after all! XD

Interesting...That horned armour with the glasses is actually not fictional. It was fashioned as court armour, not for battle, for a Renaissance king. If I can remember the name and king I'll update.

Ritta Nakanishi draws and authors books on Japanese armor and uniforms similar to Osprey lots of focus on images and detail. His books are written in Japanese and English, so you may find them useful. I have a few of his books, they are pricey in the US, I recommend getting them from Japan, maybe via Amazon.jp or Rakuten.

In Japan there are a lot of illustrated books on Japanese samurai, some that like monthly magazines. If you know anyone in Japan they might be able to send you a few, they are rather cheap there.

Time to bring this thread back!

If you go to Pixiv, there's a lot of art that illustrates scenes from not only the Sengoku period, but other periods of history as well (not just Japanese history, either!).

Some of my favorites (you might need a Pixiv account to view these; luckily, there's an English version now):

http://www.pixiv.net/member_illust.p...st_id=18900900 (This one is unique because it depicts pre-samurai warriors; notice that one of the warriors is holding a shield, and also note the fact that the arms and armor look more Chinese than later arms and armor)

http://www.pixiv.net/member_illust.p...st_id=18686315 (Gorgeous illustration of Kato Kiyomasa; note Kumamoto castle in the background, and also note the "Namumyohorengekyo" banners--the Chinese characters look a lot better than in this non-native illustration: https://picasaweb.google.com/flameth...33817494982690)

    http://www.pixiv.net/member_illust.p...st_id=17589574 (an arquebusier)

    http://www.pixiv.net/member_illust.p...st_id=18420568 (a scene of Sekigahara)

http://www.pixiv.net/member_illust.p...st_id=30124977 (Shingen vs Kenshin at Kawanakajima; the artist says he copied it from an artbook; also, the characters on the Takeda banner look a lot better than in this one drawn by Richard Hook: https://picasaweb.google.com/flameth...32853712231394)

Some works from http://www.pixiv.net/member.php?id=439779 (he also has his own site: http://sengoku-gallery.com/)

    Also this one: http://www.pixiv.net/member.php?id=2388383 (http://seimeinoyakushin.blog24.fc2.com/)

And there are a lot more. Just look at historical artist Legionarius's (http://www.pixiv.net/member.php?id=160608) bookmarks (you might want to check out some of his work, too):

That's all for now, although I'd like to point out that one of my biggest pet peeves is when artists who don't know Chinese characters well (usually non-native artists) draw misshapen characters that would seem ridiculous to Japanese people.
