    The Writers' Study
    Information and FAQ Thread

The Writers' Study is the place for creative writing at TWC. It is the home of community writing competitions, creative writing works, TWC member blogs, and the Lounge where writers share their experience and converse. The Writers Lounge also hosts threads where writers showcase their work. This post will hopefully explain more about what goes on in the Writers' Study, as well as providing some useful information.

Frequently Asked QuestionsWhat is an AAR?
AAR stands for After Action Report. It is a form of fan fiction, a story based on one's game. The different games (e.g. RTW, MTW2, ETW etc.) have different subforums for member written AARs. Most of the AARs on TWC are based on Total War games, although the site hosts AARs from various other games too. Links to the AAR sub-forums can be found further on in this thread.

How do I write an AAR?
There are plenty of great resources on TWC to help new writers. The Critic's Quill is a TWC publication that focuses on AARs and Creative Writing, offering reviews and articles to help out writers. You can check out the latest issues of the Critic's Quill here , whilst older issues and their articles can be found here. If you are interested in searching for a particular article the Log Book is an index of all the articles that have been published by the Critic's Quill.

Alongside these resources, the best we thing we can suggest is that you read other AARs to see examples of them in action. If you are interested in finding some AARs to read you can either browse through the indexes of finished AARs or ask in the Lounge for some suggestions, the WS community is always more than willing to help out new writers and answer any questions you may have.

How do I advertise my AAR?
So you've started an AAR and want to get some readers! The Writers' Study has an Advertising Board where you can advertise your own AAR or creative writing and post for others to see. Please note though that if you take part in the competitions hosted here in the WS you cannot directly ask members to vote for your work.

Where can I find finished AARs?
Each AAR sub-forum has an index that contains all the finished AARs posted within that forum. If you follow the links below you will be taken to the respective index, and if you happen to stumble across a finished AAR that isn't listed please let us know and we will add it in as soon as possible.

    What about Creative Writing?
The Creative Writing section has its own index of finished works called The Gilded Hall, which can be found here.

What kind of competitions are hosted here?
We hold monthly competitions for both AARs and creative writing pieces such as serials, short stories, and poems. AARs can compete in the MAARC, whilst creative writers can enter their work into the MCWC. Alongside this there is a weekly 500 word short-story contest known as the Tale of the Week which has a different theme and set of key words every week for you to compete in. Details on all these competitions can be found below.

We also have a special annual competition known as the Yearly Awards, where members can nominate some of their favourite authors, stories, and characters in a range of categories. They are a great way to look back across the year and showcase the best the Study has to offer.

Where can I ask more questions?
If you have any more questions or feedback than please feel free to visit the chat thread and ask away. The Tale of the Week competition has its own thread for the same purpose where you can ask TotW related questions as well as comment on the week's submissions.

Competition InformationCompetitions are for fun, therefore good sportsmanship and courtesy are strongly recommended! Every member is allowed to vote in the competition polls. This is and will stay a community competition accessible to everyone. We do ask however, that before parking in a competition you read through the rules for that particular competition. The MAARC and MCWC rules can be found here, whilst the rules for the TotW are found in the weekly submission threads.

The currently active Writers' Study Competitions are:

    • Monthly After Action Report Competition (MAARC)
    • Monthly Creative Writing Competition (MCWC)
    • Tale of the Week (TotW)

There are also Writers' Study Duels. These only take place when two members of TWC decide they would like to engage in a Duel. Since the competition is not open to the whole membership of TWC (only the two duellists), no competition points are awarded for winning a Duel. Like TotW, Duels & Challenges can involve a theme, a picture and/or key words; the competitors each write a short story (or a poem, or write a short piece in another style they have agreed between them) and the winner is decided by a vote. More details can be found in this post.

    Awards
By taking part in WS competitions (other than Duels) you have the chance to gain points towards earning the Writers' Study Competition Medal and climb to the top of the Hall of Fame, where the names of the Study's greatest competition-winners are inscribed into history. The more points you earn the higher you sit and the shinier your medal:

    • 6 points - bronze medal
    • 12 points - silver medal
    • 24 points - golden medal

Points are awarded accordingly, and can also be awarded at the discretion of the Writers' Study Staff for other competitions such as the Yearly Awards:

    • 4 points for the winner (3 points if it is a reduced competition) of a MAARC or MCWC
    • 3 points for the runner-up (2 points if it is a reduced competition)
    • 2 points for third place (no points are awared if it is a reduced competition)
    • 1 point for a Tale of the Week win

    Advertising Rules

These rules apply to all of the competitions here in the Writers' Study unless stated otherwise. It is important that you are aware of them and abide by them so you don't get disqualified from entering competitions. The Writers' Study Staff will take whatever steps necessary to insure the integrity of the competitions:

    • Advertising of the competitions is allowed in the Study, however any kind of direct advertising to advocate nominees is prohibited.
    • Asking for votes via any method is not allowed and will result in an immediate disqualification.
    • Breaking these rules will result in measures being taken at the discretion of the Writers' Study Staff.

    Duels

Welcome to the information post for the WS Duels! Here we hope you will find everything you need to know about our Duels - but if you have any questions, please send any of the Writers' Study Staff a PM and we'll do our best to help.

The most important question, of course, is "What is a Duel?" The simplest answer is: it's rather like Tale of the Week, but with only two participants.

Before we get into the details of how this works, we have to say this:

    • We all (including bystanders) enter into combat with the understanding that things must remain good-natured. You are encouraged to discuss matters with your opponent if you are worried that things are becoming too heated.
    • If you feel there is a serious issue, please refer the matter to WS Staff or Moderation, whichever is appropriate. And, of course, please feel free to contact WS Staff if you have any questions.
    • The Terms of Service must be adhered to at all times, and Moderation Staff will deal with any breaches, just as usual. Our colleagues in Moderation are highly-trained, experienced, and sensible - they can tell good-natured banter from insult.
    • Any communications with a duellist or a bystander which are about the challenge and take place while the challenge is going on must be made in public.
    • There will be no official prize for winning, but bystanders are encouraged to rep the entry they like best.
    • Nobody is permitted to request or solicit rep, either for themselves or for someone else. If a participant does this, they will be disqualified immediately. Repeated offences will result in a permanent ban from duelling for that person. If a bystander does this, penalties will be applied at the discretion of WS Staff and Hex.
    • Likewise, nobody is permitted to offer rep, or any other form of payment, in exchange for votes, positive comments on a particular entry, or anything else that might affect the course of a Duel. If a participant does this, they will be disqualified immediately. Repeated offences will result in a permanent ban from duelling for that person. If a bystander does this, penalties will be applied at the discretion of WS Staff and Hex.

    On to the details...

    How it all works:

    1. Throwing down the gauntlet
Before the Duel itself can begin, you need to discuss some things with your opponent. First of all, you both need to agree that you're happy to have a Duel!

Important Note: You will notice that you and your opponent need to have agreed in advance - in private - that there's going to be a Duel. You also need to PM a member of WS Staff to let us know there's going to be a Duel. You can do all the rest of the negotiating (and boasting) in public, if you want to. If you choose to negotiate in public, you need to PM a member of WS Staff once the terms are final - this is so we're sure the negotiations are over.

Once you've agreed that there will be a Duel, you obviously need to agree on the terms of the Duel.

The terms of your Duel can include any or all of:
    • a maximum word-limit, a minimum word-limit, or both. (We recommend not writing anything very long, though - you need people to have enough time to read it, or else they won't vote!)
    • a theme
    • an image to inspire your writing
    • a word - or several words - that you both have to include in your submission
    • a style or form of writing that you have to stick to
    • a deadline by which your submissions must be sent to WS Staff
    • any other reasonable restriction

Writers' Study Staff will check the terms of your Duel before the Duel begins, and if they are not acceptable for any reason, you will be asked to change them.

If you and your opponent are both happy to negotiate the terms of your Duel in public, that will take place on this thread. One or other of you will officially throw down the gauntlet, proclaiming your supremacy and boasting about the magnificence of your writing. The other will respond in kind. Bystanders will gasp at the audacity of your claims, munch popcorn, and generally join in (if they feel like it). Somehow, in the midst of this chaos, you will negotiate the terms of your Duel.

However, if you would prefer to do all that tedious negotiating in private, you're welcome to do that. In that case, just let WS Staff know who the duellists will be and what terms you've agreed on, and we'll all move directly to the next stage...

    2. Meet your doom
Once you've agreed on your terms (and WS Staff are happy with them), and you've written your submission, you need to send it to the member of WS Staff running your Duel. If you chose to boast, bluster and negotiate in public, you may, of course, continue to boast and bluster while writing your submission - and throughout the voting period.

    3. Let the games begin
Once both duellists have sent their submissions to WS Staff, a member of WS Staff will open up a thread in the Lounge in order to contain the bloodshed poll. Voting will last for 7 days.

    4. May the Fates be with you
After 7 days the votes will be tallied, and the winner announced. The winner will have their name immortalised in the Hall of Fame. The crowd may - or may not, because crowds are capricious - reward their favourite submission with rep. Or they may reward a valiant loser with rep. Or both.

In the event of a draw, WS Study Staff will... erm... well, we'll find some way of entering that result into the Hall of Fame, and it will be up to the two duellists to decide whether or not they want a rematch!
