Default Not One, but TWO Tornadoes hit NYC

    http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-201_162-...weather-in-ne/

(CBS/AP) A tornado swept out of the sea and hit a beachfront neighborhood in New York City on Saturday morning, hurling debris in the air, knocking out power and startling residents who once thought of twisters as a Midwestern phenomenon.

The National Weather Service confirmed later in the day that a second, stronger tornado touched down in Brooklyn moments after the first hit the beachside community of Breezy Point in Queens.

The second tornado hit at about 11:05 a.m. in the Canarsie section of Brooklyn, around 10 minutes after the first struck. Videos taken by bystanders at the Queens beachfront on showed a funnel cloud sucking up water, then sand, and then small pieces of buildings, as it moved through the Rockaway peninsula.
I...wow. I'm honestly scared. The Northeast NEVER gets weather this bad.
when the union's inspiration through the worker's blood shall run,
there can be no power greater anywhere beneath the sun,
yet what force on earth is weaker than the feeble strength of one?
but the union makes us strong.

Brooklyn got a tornado about a two years ago. My gf mom was visiting us and her dad called to tell them that he just watched a tornado go down their street. When I went to visit in July he took us for a walk to show us where all the trees were ripped up.

Surprised they don't land in Manahattan with the way the wind travels down some the avenues. One would think the cross sections would cause eddies.

Tornadoes, or weather systems capable of producing them, actually aren't that rare in the geographical region where New York state is.

@Ram, it'd take much taller buildings producing vastly most significant heat and moisture differentials to even get close to producing a system capable of generating a tornado.

Gotcha Magic. Just figured during times of the Noreasters that happens every year which blows everything in my parents yard down to the neighbors, including their floating dock, it might happen.

It isn't impossible, just really improbable.

So which is it? Improbable, therefore rare, or neither rare nor improbable but common?

I like that a number of major hurricane systems tore through the North East in the 1800s and 1900s.

It makes the Hurricane = End of the world people look stupid.

Hurricanes happen every year. They go where they go.

We've only been paying attention recently on account of the fact we Europeans haven't been around here very long and we haven't been practicing science very long.

The worst hurricane season recorded was in 1780...

Just one of the storms killed 22,000 people. Katrina for comparison killed under 2,000 (including missing) and most of that is from the fact N'Orleans is a sunken basin between the Mississippi and the Ocean... (Guys lets build a major city in a ing death trap of low ground between major water features in an area prone to flooding and major storms...)
