Rumours are adrift. The count of Baden, Alan IX seems to be displeased being a vassal of Kingdom of the Germans. The apparent cause could be seen as his lower rank when compared to other nobles. Whatever the reasons, the King of the Germans, Otto III, believes that the count is no longer loyal. The King has reasons to believe that the count is currently negotiating to join either Arles or France.

King Otto III wants the German lords to deal with this by any means possible.

Duke Rolf of saxony arrives in Baden to negotiate with the count under a flag of truce.

The people inform you that the count is away in the Kingdom of Arles (Burgundy).

the duke dismounts and addresses the people of the city from a podium:
Noble people of Baden and citizens of the Empire! I have come today to point out that your local lord is a traitor to the Empire! HE chooses to consort with the evil Burgundii, to be bribed to their evil cause. He would have YOU, noble citizens, fall under the yoke of a Tyrant King! This goes against god! His Holiness the pope, the man who ordained and crowned our great emperor, Is the representative of god on our earth! To desert the emperor, is to go against the sovereignty the Pope has placed in him! This count goes against god's will! You are all god fearing, and noble folk, and I am sure that you would not go against the will of god himself? If my judgement in you is well placed, then I implore you to help me seize this province in The Emperor's name! To drive the Heathen from baden with the rod of chastisement and the medicine of Rebuke! He shall taste the steel, of the noble germans of baden, and noble citizens of the Empire!!! to arms!!
